Where is it leaking from? Most leaks are simple to fix and can be done without removing the pump from the vehicle. Reseal kits are very inexpensive ($15-20). If necessary, removing and installing the pump is a bit involved, but a very worthwhile initiation into the world of older VW diesels. It requires the removal and installation of the timing belt. Scribing a mark between pump and bracket can return the pump to the same timing location, but getting the tools and learning how to time the engine will likely be very worthwhile if you plan on using the car for some time to come. Can't comment on the Giles pumps as I've never had one. I believe the cost difference between the Giles rebuild and the local Bosch shop is not huge. I personally have opted to learn automotive mechanicking and am very glad to have done so. If you enjoy mechanical things and fixing them, then you are likely much better off getting the tools and learning as you go along. The first time you do a task, it might be cheaper to pay a professional, but the lessons learned, the added freedom and peace of mind of knowing how your car works is priceless in the long run.
