aftermarket exhaust on AAZ?

Can I fit an aftermarket exhaust on my 97 AAZ?

Like TT, or magnaflow?

If so, is it a cat-back?

Any info would be great!

yes, any mk3 exhaust will work.  you don't need a muffler, a resonator alone will be fine.  2.5" i believe was the best way to go.  You should think about a downpipe as well.

So any catback system would work?

I searched (mildly).

I can't lose the cat, otherwise I won't pass safety inspection - but want to put something catback, and wasn't sure if any aftermarket system would fit/work.

I'm assuming the cat is not 2.5" out?

man forget the catback...  sounds like you're talkin gasser talk  :lol:  just straight pipe that thing and enjoy the low EGT's    and if you really need it for inspection, just gut the thing.  how would they know??? do they tear into your exhaust system and say "HA! caught you!" "so does this mean you're not welding my exhaust system back up???" "ugh..."

The joys and safety precautions were discussed on a similar thread... The general consensus was emptying/gutting the catalytic converter keeping safety in mind, either;

- do it in a bucket of water
or
- attatch a workshop vacum cleaner so you do not inhale the catalytic particles

Locally the silencer/exhaust shops pass the gutted outer body of a catalytic converter over a straight pipe and neatly weld the edges... And unless your motor's emissions are so high up due to overfuelling ecc that you fail the emissions test they will not inquire further. Remember, the visual inspection must confirm presence of a catalytic converter, but if the emissions are too high they will fail you and ask you to replace the catalytic converter and re-run test... Then again pointless having a working cat and opened up the smoke screw and fuel enrichment ecc, the converter will NOT compensate for that!

if you want to pass emissions, remember that too high advanced timing gives too high NOx emissions.  just retard the crap out of the engine (0.80mm) and reduce the fueling so that the car is barely getting fuel and almost stalling... like 800 rpm.  that'll pass for sure... then bump the timing back up and increase the fueling  :twisted: glad they don't test diesels here... yet.

lucky Baxterds... I have to buy a new anti tamper seal for the pump every year before every VRT/MOT... then remove it again after the test   :evil: that's an extra $15-18

But there's a couple of things at play here.

1 - I want to keep my cat. I don't like contributing to green house gases more than necessary.

2 - I don't have a local shop that will do a straight pipe for me (I've already shopped around)


All I wanted to know is - will a regular aftermarket catback (like magnaflow/TT/autotech) work for me? And also, what size is the outlet on the cat? If its 2.25, can a shop fit 2.5 on there?

A clogged up cat will do more to harm your fuel efficiency and won't work effectively anyways.  If you're that concerned about your enviro impact run bio and gut your cat and replace with a free flowing exhaust.  You can get flanges welded to your cat to allow you to put it back in as much as you want, just ask the installer to put in a "test pipe" section the same length as the cat with the same flanges.

I have intalled a golf mk3 gti exhust on the back of my motor and it fits well, same size bore etc and fittings.

My cat is going to stay, I just need info on what size is everything after the cat.

Like I said, I don't have a local shop that will do straight pipes for me, I've already looked into it, so that is not an option.

i picked up a remus exhaust cat back system off ebay mate. this means that all parts fit after the cat on your car. should be straight forward fitting with a reputable manufacturer mate.
