basicly i hav an aaz and just added a tdi 140amp alternator aparently off a new A4 and now my rev counter wont work, was previously using the W terminal but dont know where to get the signal from now, i thort it was the 2 wires cumming out the plug at the top front side (2 blue wires) but these dont seem to work, am i barking up the wrong tree, or cud there be a problem with my alternator or rev counter?
maybe ive wired it wrong, wen i had the W terminal only one wire needed to go to the taco, do i need to make a circuit of sum kind to get a signal with this one?

Some gasser alternators don't have the W terminal actually wired up. Though, I've yet to run across one that actually says "W" and isn't setup to pickup the signal. Are you sure your unit actually has the W terminal on it?

You can make a w terminal. You just need to solder a wire onto one of the junctions where the windings hook to the diodes so that you get unrectified AC. Either run a very well insulated wire out for your w terminal, or steal a terminal out of another alt and install it in yours. If you look here
http://www.66rover.com/rover%20rebuild/index.html and click on 052907, you can see how I did it on my Delco.

No...you can't get the signal like a gasser does...and new gassers don't even use the coil for the most part.
Here is your answer though! Perfect JIMFOO!!!

140amps would be nice to have. Your first one there def. does have the clutch pulley (I actually have a brand new one sitting here (the clutch pulley that is) waiting for a nice alternator to install it on). The second does not. I remember someone on the board here saying that there is a guy on ebay that does "rewire" alternators...be it your VW 70, 90, 120amp for 140amps if you want it. I think 120amp would be plenty. Currently I'm running a 90amp with my A/W setup and some other bits (fuel pumps, will have relayed lights, etc.) I'm not planning anything major stereo wise. 140amp is a possibility though and would be nice with the clutched setup. I still haven't looked into getting an alternator from him...but may need to in the future. Def. with the b3 mTDI project on the horizon! Need to find another 1z/AHU accessory bracket for that matter though!

those wheels are hot ,im droolin
hey you can get a "w" terminal by splitting the case, and soldering a wire to any one of the 3 leads coming off the stator going to the diode pack
just connect to it BEFORE the diode pack, this is ac electricity and the tach runs off of the frequency
the middle one is the w lead
they wont be labled, but the 3 stator leads are u,v,and w if i remember the din wiring standards correctly
i have an old 55 amp alternator in my car that i modded this way,so i can use my vdo diesel tach
ive done it many times,as ive had alternators fail/etc...ive had the same tach for over 10 years now and its been in many cars
