upgrade a 1.6L non turbo to turbo
« on: December 28, 2007, 08:20:43 pm »
I have a jetta with the 1.6L non turbo.  What benefits would I gain by putting a turbo on the engine?

If you also turn up the fuel, theres lots of power to be had.I wouldnt think you could get a 1.6 over 130 hp without major mods! With just the turbo, not much. Then its pretty much an eco=diesel. With the correct IP turned up,and 20lbs of boost to go with it you could see substantial gains.

You would gain the benefits of forced induction. Quite simple really.  Boost levels can go insanely high if you want them to be.

In other words, your diesel will now have the potential to be fast

This is my first diesel vehicle and I am still learning about the engine.  My biggest goal for this car is to be my daily runner to work.  Performance is my goal with this car.

It had the timing belt replaced this past summer.  New CV joints in 05.  New alternator in 06.  Vehicle has 225K on it.  What else can I do to increase performance.

Thanks, John

IMAO that could be a really high revving engine! can make some power the only problem 1.5 always seem to develope a nasty blowby problem! if that can be worked out ? it has been done before even by the vw factory i don't know how many factory 1.5TD's are out there? pretty rare! there are aftermarket turbo kits that were made in the early '80's  drake, spearco, calloway, B.A.E. just to name a few!
those old turbo kits are still floating around used for sale everyonce in a while?
thanks Duane

Thanks in advance,

it depends if you want to go with the TD pump and injectors or not.

I'd expect in the $400 range though depending on who and where you buy it from and the condition of the parts
