Author Topic: 1.5L head on a 1.6L block (Read 4697 times)

So, it never ends.
I figure out all the starting issues and than there is a crack in the block.

I have a good (Well, good enough) 1.5L head and can get my hands on a 1.6L block.

I know the bolt size could be different depending on the year. Hopefully I get an older one with the 11MM bolts.

If it is a 12MM block, has anyone made the bolt hole bigger in a 1.5L head?

Next, what head gasket to use? I would assume a 1.5L (Fits the head better?).

Any other input would be appreciated.

11mm bolts only for the 1.5l head. use the 1.6l gasket. use an 11mm block and it will be fine.

i think you need to get an oil drain plug reducer? i read that a while ago! but i'm sure someone will chim in on this topic? and let you know for sure!

Ohhh yes, I also remember seeing a reducer.

I don't know why my search isn't working. I type in the simplest thing and it says it can't find anything.

So, if this isn't a 11MM block, how about having the headbolt holes punched out a bit in the head.

This starting to sounds like more work that just getting a 1.6L head.

But, I'm cheap.

yep you can drill them out! it's been done you will end up with more compression with a 1.5 head on a 1.6 block! 1.5 head has smaller swirl chambers IIRC. but find that thread i can't remember all the details?

Will it work and be driveable.

I was thinking that I would put the highest notch head gasket to calm the compression a bit.

I know gasser engine you can double up on head gaskets to lower compression, how about on a diesel? Am I thinkin' crazy?

I dont really see the need for a reducer in this application. If it was a 1.6 head on a 1.5, then yeah, a reducer would be a good idea.

Most shops (at least the ones that I used to work for) will use the thickest gasket or whatever came off the car (provided the car cam to the shop with a head on it). They dont really measure much. I measure every one that I have dealt with just to make sure.

Dont double up on gaskets ina diesel. you will have leakage over time. its a given. I am still worried about my glued 1.9 gasket on my scirocco with a mechanical head.

I've heard that going w/ larger than needed HG is a no-no because it screws w/ quench, which results in poor power and economy. I wonder if you can you take some material out of the piston tops or combustion chamber to drop the effective compression while still using the proper size HG.

This is the last questions I have.

Should I get the 1.5 or 1.6 HG?

I had a 1.6 gasket on my 1.5 engine (PO didn't know the car had a 1.5) and it leaked around the main oil return.

I would think I would get the 1.5 HG.
Seal the head better (Oil return hole on the gasket not so close to the edge of the head).

depends on if its an original 1.5l head. the later (OEM) replacement heads had a larger overhang (for loss of a better term) for the oil return. If you have the later unit, use a 1.6l gasket. If you have the earlier head then use the 1.5l gasket. I think the bore is the same with the 1.5l and the 1.6l but I am lazy and dont have the time to look it up right now. If you really want to know, I can check in a little bit. ETOS is on my computer but I dont know if it goes back that far.

Thanks for all the help and input. Sounds like I'll be able to rock the 1.5 head with the 1.6 block.
That'll save me a good amount of money. Now it's just going to take up my time.

I got a 5 notch 1.5L HG to ease the compression a bit.

The block I'm getting is an early 1.6L with 11mm holes, so my head will fit without modification.

So, this should work out nicely...Right?:roll:

Also, I looked it up and the 1.5L and the 1.6L both have the same bore.
