Successful N/A governor modders?
« on: December 08, 2007, 07:30:01 pm »
Hi,
I'm doing a re-seal on my injection pump and thought it would be a good time to do a little hot-rodding.

I've read a lot on the "governor mod", but it seems like the method outlined in the FAQ is not the correct method for the N/A.

For the N/A, I want to shim the main spring?  Is this right?

Has anyone done this mod with good results?  Thanks!

In other news, I just ordered a GERMAN timing belt and tensioner...

Jimfoo told me NOT to shim/remove the intermediate spring. He put a solid piece in there and it hurt drivability. I shimmed the Main spring about 1/4" or .250.... Maybe closer to .3"  Anyway, I had perfect results and wouldn't do it any other way. You try and let us know.

There's absolutely no reason to shim the intermediate spring - it's total movement is like 2mm, you can easily overcome it with the throttle.  What it does is make the engine a whole heck of a lot more driveable.  People mistakenly think they're gaining something by shimming it since it seems like it can reduce fueling, but it's such a small amount just pressing the pedal down further takes care of that and then some.

The big long main spring is all you need to mess with.

i used 2 1/8 inch thick stainless nuts. fit perfect over the shaft. worked like a dream. and like him ^, i too wouldnt do it any other way, not with how good it works doing this.

I believe that it is turning the pump into a on/off switch. Or at least there will be a varying dead spot in your pedal. It has been awhile but I think that is what Jimfoo said to me. I just know putting probably .300" of shim in the main spring made it go like a scalded goose with no problems otherwise.

I just remembered!
The spot in the middle was bad because he couldn't keep a steady speed. That was the biggest concern with the intermediate spring shim.

thanks
I will shim the main spring. 1 more question: for 1/4mile in NA diesel cathegory the better is shim the intermediate spring and the main or only the main?
