Diesel tach/ Diesel alternator!!
« on: December 04, 2007, 01:59:48 pm »
Hi, i own a vw 2.4 van with a w feed alternator fitted. I bought a set of dash clocks from a similar aged 1.9td van with a rev counter rather than a clock. When fitted the rev counter goes round to the max position. Anyone any ideas? I seem to be chasing my tail at the moment- not a good look!! Many thanks in advance, Matt.

I'm guessing your rev counter goes up to 7000 rpm ??

You probably have a dash for a gas van rather than a diesel... the rev counter signals are different and so is the calibration.

There is a converter box available which some have used to convert the signal:

http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=128/category_id=287/home_id=59/mode=prod/prd128.htm

There are also some accounts of people modifying the circuit boards... although I've never seen specifics for a van cluster.

Obviously the easiest approach is to get the correct cluster.... not always an easy task of course.

Hi, thanks for reply. My clocks only go to 5000 as they came from a 1.9 turbo diesel van. Hence my confusion!!

Did that run straight off your alternator? Any diodes or resistors etc involved?? Many thanks, Matt.

This is the one..a bit expensive but I like it!

What does it mean my "fabrication required: modification to the flywheel" ?

Can this go to any diesel like the OP Vanagon? Or are there other "modifications" required?

Your 2.4 is an IDI and the 1.9 clocks are from a TDI.

TDI clocks take a signal from the ECU

You cant run them from the W term on the alt.

The easiest solution is to send 20 and a revcounter from a gasser to me and I'll mod it.

I've got a spare circuit board here, if you can solder two terminals you can swap it into your existing TDI guages. Probably.

On each of the link pages there is a link to installation instructions.  The 2888 looks to be the easiest to install as it uses a sensor that mounts to the alternator, but would also be the least accurate.  The 6806 should be the most accurate, but most work to install.  Looking at the instructions, I think you could use the crank pulley instead of the flywheel.  I think maybe tabs welded to the face of the pulley would be the easiest, not sure if they would cause problems otherwise.

shegel,  what is street price on the 2888?
