Ok my 86 golf 1.6 n/a is running great! New injector pump, new rings, rebuilt head, new bearings. What do I need to know about the injectors? The car has 110,000 original miles on it, and probably the original injectors. It sat for 7 years before I started to fix it up. I see everyone saying rebuild injectors every 60,000 or so. Please excuse my stupid question, but can I buy nozzles and put them on the injector myself, or is this beyond a rookie? Am I better off buying complete rebuilt ones? What is pop testing?
Thanks
Robert
safest option: get rebuilt injectors or bring your injectors to a shop and get them rebuilt properly.
pop test is to test the opening pressure of your injectors. Turbo is 155 bar while N/A is 135 bar. opening pressure can affect timing so it is considered critical.
worn injector nozzles can spray so bad that they can melt a hole in a piston. installing new nozzles on injectors yourself will assure that doesn't happen, but you must be totally clean! there is a writeup by someone about how to sand down the sealing surface so that the injector doesn't leak... the pop pressure might be off, but at least you'll have a safe injection pattern.
