Thinking of buying VW Golf 1993 Model Mk3 1.9 Diesel

I'm thinking of buying a VW Golf 1993 Model Mk3 1.9 Diesel

I know it may sound obsolete but I live in Malta and because it's such a small country and already so many cars, we have a registration tax on foreign cars before they can legally remain in Malta. The registration tax is 75% of what the car is worth, and it may increase over 100% depending on the engine. 2.0L Petrol engine for example, costs thousands of euros to have registered in Malta and thats excluding the incredibly high rates of insurance even just for fire and theft.

Anyway, sorry was going off topic. I want to buy a first car, and I want a good car. Was thinking of buying a VW Golf, and the Mk3 1993 model is within my price range. I'm sticking to diesel, because it's still cheaper then petrol and lasts so much longer.

Was hoping somebody could tell me what they think. I just included all the extra details so you understand it costs quite a good amount of money to get what you would think of as a cheap car. At the moment I can get a VW Golf 1993 Model Mk3 Diesel 1.9 for just under 6000 Euros.

I have a little over 6000 euros saved up and this is the best I can buy.

Anyway, thankyou for reading and hope you can give some advice.

Well it's mainly cause the law in Malta isn't very well enforced. Most of us aren't disciplined and don't really run into the law so we can drive how the way we want, but we are such a small country with so many cars that crashes happen all the time. Mainly due to speeding....the women here mainly do the stupid crashes. Thats why insurance is so expensive, and the younger you are the more expensive it is. For example, a Toyota Glanza, you can't even be insured for unless you are atleast 25 years old.

Anyway, 6000 Euros cause thats the average value of a VW Golf Mk3 1993 Model. The import + registration fees kind of effect all prices of cars in Malta. If it were finally removed, then the price of cars would drop radically, but the government hasn't mentioned removing it, but the people who represent Malta in Brussles at the EU thing, are trying to get the EU to force it on the government to remove the tax, cause they've already been told to remove it for EU cars.

But I want to know if it's a car worth getting, cause it's either that or a Toyota startlet, and I noticed you guys seem to be pros on VW cars, so I thought it would be best to ask here.

do a search on 1.9 crank fix.  you will most likely need to have this done on your 1.9 unless someone else has already done it to the motor. it basically involves machining the crank to accept the TDI crank sprocket.  if there is already some damage, it may need to be welded up.

if you want power/economy i seriously recommend getting Giles to do up your pump.  you will also want an intercooler installed for performance :)

your country has an interesting approach to the whole bad driver thing.  just make everyone suffer like they did in school when one kid was bad...

 :?

depending on how well the car was maintained, you may or may not need a lot of work done for it to run nice and smooth.   new/rebuilt injection pump & injectors, fuel filter etc.  are good things to get done and can last 200'000kms+ although some people install new nozzles in their injectors as a precaution.

good luck if you choose to buy the mk3 1.9 :)
