How's the powerband with a non VNT turbo on a TDI?
Anyone running gasser turbos? As far as I know the difference between gasser and diesel turbos is that the gasser turbos have a different choice of material because they're running on a much higher temperature than diesel turbos.
gasser turbo's make power in the upper rpm range, say 3500 rpm and beyond? up to 7k rpm ?
diesels barely rev to 5000 rpm. the turbo will make boost at around 1800 rpm.
i'm pretty sure diesels can get just as hot as gassers, and the only reason a gasser would get hot is from running too lean.

Then I don't want to know how hot the gassers go--I got my K03 (non VNT wastegated) turbo to 1600 degrees quite often--although I didn't keep it there!
JT is right about the power/RPM range, to answer your question, there are hybrid turbos out there that I've had dealings with for a few years that give you extra power, MPG and torque, but on the whole there are not many real options for the wastegated crowd. As for power band, I'd pull hard from 1700 RPM to almost 5K with a hybrid turbo, 1800-4500 with a standard wastegated turbo.

So a non VNT turbo works almost as good as an VNT - just a little more lag.
So which non VNT turbo do you guys recommend for let's say 200-220 hp on a 1,9 TDI?
Stage III hybrid with PP764s or R520s, custom tune and downpipe and FMIC should do the trick. Let me know if I can help.

I use a GT2056(wastegate) on my setup and it works beautifully. Alot of the mk4 guys are biased towards the VNT setups because its easier for the existing ECU in the car, to control them. FWIW Audi's running 2 GT37 wastegate turbos on their R10.
