Are there different kinds of glow plug relays??
« on: November 05, 2007, 08:17:49 pm »
I was going thru my glow plug system (fast style) since the weather is getting colder in Chicagoland. Tha Bently book talks about the relay giving power to the glow plugs about 6 to 7 seconds after the dash light goes out. My test light goes out at the same time the dash light goes out. Is this correct? Does a different model relay work after the dash light goes out? What are the guys in the great white north doing with this?  :D

Greetings from the great white north... and yes, we had snow this weekend.  Thanks so much for bringing up such a painful subject.. next time just give me a paper cut and pour lemon juice on it why dontcha....   ;-

But I digress...

Yes there are several different relays in circulation, and if you really have an 81 Rabbit your OEM relay was a slow rather than a fast, even with the turbo.

As you've learned with your test light the yellow LED has very little to do with when power is actually applied to the plugs, and the relay will make different decisions based on engine temperature.  In addition, some provide "afterglow" and some don't, again dependent on engine temp.

If you can find the 9 digit part number we can look up your relay and perhaps tell you more about what to expect.

BTW, in the GWN we tend to use slow relays, or no relay at all (pushbutton and Ford starter solenoid).. need all the glow we can get !!!

Hi Vince,
Checked the part #'s of the relays I had laying around. The one thats in the car is 443  911  261    there is also another # on it  51  233  001 .  Other relays laying around are: 89  9007  000   and   171  911  261E   and   321  911  261  .  Let me know what you think from these part #'s.
When you wire in the Ford starter relay do you eliminate the Glow Plug relay or just piggy-back past the relay?
Thanks,
JB
