« on: November 05, 2007, 07:22:11 pm »
My trans number is chd29092  where the clutch release lever is on the end of the transmission, there is a round tin cover that has a vw symbol on it. mine is a little banged up, is there oil behind the cover, or is it sealed before it gets there? I appreciate all your help. the trans is on a canadian aaz 1.9

also, does anyone know the ratios for this trans? My bentley manual doesn't offer the info for this trans code. Or is it possible that I have the wrong numbers off the trans?

Yup there's oil.... the cover is cheap to replace but draining the tranny is recommended.

This guy has a fantastic site on 020 transmissions.... here's what it looks like with that cover off:

(second picture down)

You pry the old cover off with a screwdriver, and tap the new one on with a hammer.... easy as that !

I just pulled mine off.  Car jacked up high enough on left front for the tire to clear the ground, no oil running out of the cover.  There was a bit of oil in there, but not leaking out.

there should be oil drooling out IF your tranny was properly filled ...

most shops just fill through the side plug and let it go at that ... specs call for another 1/2 L  on top of that ... ( thru the speedo cable fitting)

BUT the tranny WILL WORK FINE, if  low on oil .....

Depends on which tranny. As per Bentley: "Beginning with transaxle no. 08097 (built 9/8/87) the oil filler hole has been relocated 7 mm higher. Proper oil fill level is when oil reaches the edge of the filler hole. It is no longer necessary to remove the speedometer drive cable and add additional oil."

There had better be oil behind that cover on level ground, since that's how the throwout bearing is lubricated, and the clutch arm, and.... !!!

I guess I just thought that throw out bearings thru the ages have just lived inside the bell housings of multiple automobiles and had no outside lubrication. I just didn't figure VW would put a slight press fit tin cover where it was under possible oil pressure. thanks for all the info.

Don't get me wrong... it's not brimming with oil (there's only 2l in the whole tranny) but were you to pull that cap with the car level a thin stream will come out.

My guess is that there's a mist of oil being thrown around in the tranny airspace that lubes everything.. including the throwout bearing, clutch lever, etc.

Yes the gears throw a lot of oil around, that's how it lubricates the whole tranny.
