turning fueling up?

the car runs bad at low revs and idle as you know.  i have adjusted the timing all the way one way and back again and makes no difference so i set it back to how it was.

seems to run better with cold start out.  how do i turn the fuel up!! basically which screw is it?

is there anything else i can do with the engine to get more power?

From what it sounds like you werent setting the timming properly....in order to set the timming on a diesel you need special tools. and the injection pump should be set at 0.85-1.05mm advance. I would set up the timming properly first and then start trying to make the car faster.
If the car runs better with the cold start pulled out it sounds to me like your timming is retarded....

turned fuel up and the knocking seams to have disappeared and all good a lot of healthy black smoke too

Black smoke is unburnt fuel which is high EGTs. It sounds like your pump is off a tooth. Get it timed using the proper tools.

the pump is timed up correctly and even taking its slightly advanced or retarded it makes no difference i am on the understanding its not the right pump for the engine

Blown engine in 3..2..1 Just kidding, sort of. Black smoke can be bad for more than a few seconds.

i think the longest i've smoked bad was for 5-6 seconds (couldn't see the car behind me, except a middle finger sticking out  :lol:)  

the turbo motors can surely take a beating, but they do have a breaking point.

Mine smokes like mad....but i do have a pre turbo mounted egt guage and i never have seen it exceed 600 degrees C (thats about 1100F for you americans). and i have to really try for it to hit that high....usually sits around 400 with spirited driving.
I havent figured out why it smokes....timming is set at 1.00mm head was redone along with rebuilt and tested injectors. I also have other problems that are leaning me towards a worn pump!!

NON TURBO 1.6 NA!!

 i am going to get the timing double and treble checked at a garage me thinks just to make sure as all timed up right with how i followed the haynes manual all marks line up etc so cant be out. can it!!

Did you do it yourself?? if so did you use a dial guage????
If you didnt use a dial guage to time the pump then it could be out.....
timming a diesel is not as simple as doing a gas car where you line up the marks and your done.....the cam does not have a keyway on it....so you have to have a special tool to lock it at tdc....and you also have to lock the pump at tdc....and then you use a guage to time the pump correctly!!!

i did do it myself yes.

lined up flywheel mark

flat bar in end of cam to lock off

socket through pump pully to hold in place

put belt on tightened up turned over by have three or four times

all still lined up struck her up and she ran

then put engine in car and not much else changed since

forgot to mention this.  the water system seams to get pressurized so i have to leave the rad cap slightly loose to let of pressure.  it seams to have the same white smoke that comes out of the rocker breather in it

You should use a dial guage to time it correctly....it is very hard to adjust the pump by just trying to advance and retard it.
It could be a headgasket problem if you have pressure in the coolant...and white smoke!!!!!
Have you replaced the headgasket??? do you have coolant mixing with oil???? is there a lot of pressure comming out of the breather????

i will see if i get get a gauge then!

i fear the head gasket too i never touched it i have no oil loss no water loss not water in oil or other way round and yes it does breath heavy.

i plan to change engine for a td in the not so distant future but it would be nice to have this engine last till then

what boost are you running?  could be signs of bad compression.  no new rings?
