I had a rainy weekend so I thought I do my 1.6 NA to Turbo 1.6. Here's what I got........
85 solid cam 1.6 with about 32,000 miles on a rebuild. (I knew the assembler and the machine shop that did the work)
86 2 door Golf wit AC, PS and PB 246,000 miles on old engine and car
Giles Built IP set at 1.25
3" Passenger SS downpipe.
Vodoo boost controler
VDO oil, coolant, volt,EGT and boost gauges
Turbo pop off valve blocked off
New Sach clutch,
New waterpump, belts, idler, motor mounts and block heater
Pulled the engine from the top along with the trans. Remove the old exhaust system. Rebushed the shifter linkages (some were missing the bushings)
Installed new engine, prime pump and fired up. Wow very lound with jus a downpipe. Took it for a ride anyway.
Trailer it to the Exhaust shop had a 3" system install along with a flowmaster muffler (a little on the loud side for me)
Road tested...ran great pulled hard at 3500- 4500 rpms But allot of black smoke.
Contacted Giles he told me to run the boost up to 20psi (It was only 10psi before) got rid of most of the smoke. He also told me to adjust the full load screw. Just a half turn took the smoke away and the power. Tuned it a quarter turn and that did the trick.
It's like driving a ralley car!!!!! I can here the turbo whine and watch the boost gauge go up and it starts to pull. EGT temps about 500 to 850 and will spike close to 1000 F at times Just got to keep the rpms up to stay in the turbo zone. A blast to drive, put about 400 miles since last weekend on it.
Not the fast thing I have driven but now I have some power!!!! :!: :!:
Got over 36 MPGs And thats with me beating on it.
Thanks for all the help members gave me on this site, it was all good Info.
Now for an intercooler!!!
