MK2 GTD, Newbie - Few Questions Please!

Evening all, Im from the UK, Yorkshire and currently run a 1999 Mk2 Seat Toledo 1/9 TDI1 110BHP AHF
However, always had a hankering for the Mk2 Golf but need a deisel because of my 300 mile a week commute.
Recently noticed the mk2 golf GTD and had a few questions before I take the plunge.
1. did they ever do a 3dr in the UK?
2. Compared to my 110 TDi whats the performance going to be like?
3. I have seen people putting later TDI eningines in the mk2 bht it looks like a lot of work, especially on the electrical side. I would want to keep the original dask/ clocks so thats probably out. How easy would it to be to put a mk3 golf 1.9tdi in, are these engines still classed as idi? Anyone got any refernce links so I can check it out?
cheers all, think im going to be spending a lot of time round here.............

hey welcome!
1. Nope the only 3 doors were made for mainland europe I'm afraid. In the UK you have a choice of jetta 1.6TD, 5 door golf 1.6TD and golf 1.6GTD.
2. Well obviously a GTD with 80BHP won't be as quick as the 110HP seat, but it would not be far off. With a few simple tweaks shown on this site you can quite easily increase a GTD to over 110BHP
3. The MK3 had both a 1.9 TD (75HP) and TDi (90HP) engine. The former is relatively easy to fit to a mk2. The latter is a pain because of the immobiliser, miles of wiring etc, but it has been done.
A guy on a site I frequent has put a mk3 TDi in a mk2:

Damn it I was actually in Mayo at the weekend!
My brother has a 110 leon, I had a GTD. The main differences are the extreme difference in refinement, and the turbo lag of the GTD. Otherwise, quite similar in performance with the shorter ratios of the GTD box.
Not that the 1.6 engine matters now though, I am extremely jealous.

well, i didnt actually take the plunge and buy that, although its a nice car it would have been a load of hassle to get to it, get it back, and then register it in the UK.
Ive actually bought this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=230186054358&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=013
its obviously not as nice as the red one, but was only half a day to collect, has 11 months MOT and was only £400, plus its the 3dr I was after! It needs a bit of TLC and is absulutely filthy, but shows promise. Its solid and the engine seems fine.
Your right, the engine isnt as smooth and the power comes in differently (less turbo torque than the toledo, but revs higher), but over all it should be fine. Just happy to have something to play with again!
