AAZ block parts....what can be mated with it?

I am thinking of the options I have with my AAZ block. I currently have three good pistons and a good crank...so if nothing else, I need to put a head on it and replace one piston and rod (I will get them all balanced, don't worry).
Basically I want to know if I can put some TDI parts on it?
Will the TDI head and pistons fit/work on it? In other words, can use use an AAZ block to make a M-TDI?
Help me entertain some wild thoughts here?!?!?!?! I'm really just shooting the sky here!!!!
Thanks,
Mikey

You can fiddle around with
www.altrom.ca to see what part numbers match.

The TD block casting is identical to the 1Z and AHU TDI. The only difference is that the boss for the crank position sensor is not machined. If you're going mechanical you don't need it. The crank also does not have the reluctor wheel for the crank sensor, again, you won't need it. The bore and stroke are the same as are all the engine bearings. The TDI head will bolt right on. But...if you have all the TDI guts and the head, chances are you have the block as well. Not much sense swapping it all over.

Ohhh great googily moogily!!!!!
I think my jaw just hit the floor.
I need to start pricing this thing out and work with my financial sources to figure out if this is even remotely practical.
There are a few toasted TDI's around there with dead blocks, good pistons, and good heads. I think I can piece enough together to get this to a functional unit!!!!

Be careful buying parts. You want only the 1Z or AHU (96-99TDI, A3 and B4 platform) engine parts.
There may be some ALH (99.5-03) TDI engines around with broken blocks. The right hand engine mount must be removed for a timing belt change. It has a tendency to fall off if the torque to yield bolts aren't replaced. This usually results in a chunk breaking out of one of the mounting holes and a new engine is required to fix. Although these engine may be cheap, they are pretty much useless to you. They still have the same bore and stroke and most bearings sizes are still the same, but the similarity ends there. The deck height is shorter, therefore the rod length and piston pin position are different. The crank, oil pump and most accessories are also different.

Thanks for the advise there.
I will have to start calling on our good friends here in the GWN to start looking for and shipping the AHU and 1Z parts to me!!! Funding pending of course!!!

Ok, to continue this thread on and my search for well priced parts...
What is the difference btw the 1.6 and 1.9?
I know the difference is 0.3 L, but where does that happen?
Is it in the bore? Is it in the stroke? Both? By what dimensions?
If it's in the stroke, then are the connecting rods different? Is the crank really that different?
I know, lots of questions, but y'all are good for it!!!!

Both bore and stroke of the 1.9l are increased versus the 1.6l. So the crank, rods, and pistons are all different.
There is possibility that 1.9lTD crank and rods may interchange with some 1.9lTDI components. The answer should be one simple part number check away.

The rods will interchange between a TD and a TDI but you must use complete sets of each. The TD has a chunk of iron hanging off the bottom of the rod cap (balance weight of sorts?), the TDI has no such weight so you wouldn't want to mix weighted and unweighted rods. I don't fully understand the reason for this lump of iron so I can't really say what would happen if it were not present. The rods are otherwise the same with respect to length, bearing bore, pin diameter etc. You can put a TDI crank in a TD you just need to use the TDI timing pulley. You can't use a TD crank in an electronic TDI, it does not have a reluctor wheel for the crank position sensor, if you are building a mechanical TDI this is not really a problem.
I don't think any lower end parts will interchange between the 1.6TD and the 1.9TD. I think the rods are slightly narrower at the lower end, 19mm bearings in the 1.6 vs 20mm on the 1.9TD. Don't quote me on this though. I would investigate myself. Someone here must have a 1.6 rod lying around that they can measure.

I had a brain fart...and realized that I had the good 1.9 pistons in the block and a complete set of 1.6 pistons downstairs. So, I pulled one of each and held them up against eachother. The 1.6 rod is MUCH shorter and differently constructed.
That answered my questions, but I do appreciate your help.
I am trying to score some parts for this thing so please keep your fingers crossed for me!!!

1.6 has a 76.5mm bore; 1.9 is 79.5.

For the US guys,use the
www.altrom.com site, then click the US link.
You will find differences in the two,as some cars sold in the US were never sold here,or had different versions.Use the correct site.
