That's what I'd like to put in the Jetta when the time comes. Thankfully, the ones there now are still good. Need rear springs though...they're starting to sag.

Hmm reading around it seems I might have to get a big truck boost gauge.  The M21 engine runs 1.9Bar ~27psi of boost from the factory.

27 psi? And that's before you even start to "tinker" with it.

Yes, that is the only specs I can find on peak boost.  I'm not sure if that is a typo or not!

Ok update guys.

It is a 1986.

Chassis number    1815615
Vehicle code    1511
Series    E30
Model    324d
Body type    saloon
Catalog model    ECE
Production date    1986 / 06
Engine    M21
Transmission    Manual
Steering    Left
Catalyzer    NONE

(That is what the vin pulled up apparently)

My friend is going to gut the car and do a full tear down.  We both agree that red is cool, but blue is better :)  If it goes as planned we will go with something like Toyota Lexus Spectra Blue.  I think it would look nice at least, and this car is for me :D er....the "family"

Excellent find on a SWEET ride.

As others have stated - please provide LOTS of pictures.  I'd do dirty deeds for a turbo diesel Bimmer.   8)

On edit:  Is that M21 IDI or DI?  I can't seem to find much info on that engine online...

Beers,

Matt

I think I read somewhere that the M21 had 16:1 compression - that would certainly seem like DI to me...
hrmmmmm.... :)

Thanks,

Matt

this is a great find! those beemer diesels are pretty solid little engines too, i reckon you could get it to be a fast car with the right amount of boost.... then you get the natural bmw sideways action aswell! yippeee!

Thanks!  I will be in contact with you :)

We did some more work yesterday, the pump is screwed/gummed up from sitting so long :(  I fed a bottle of powerservice through it (well into it) since the return seems to be blocked/suction pretty poor in general so the pump will likely have to come out to get rebuilt.  It idles like a trooper though, no knocking to speak of and pretty dang smooth!  Smoother than the tdi I'd say.

Anyway the battle continues :)  I think this car has more in common with teh 318 since I have drums in the rear actually!  That will be a project for after she is on the road since I need to swap the rear control arms with the ones from a real 325.

Also, not sure if she had an engine swap from crazy freaking german or not (based on the vin), since she has the turbo, oil cooler and the proper pump on it, along with a fancy after market intercooler setup that is probably 2ftx2ft with really nicely done piping.  I'm sure there will be more surprises.  But hey, the in car air temp computer, crank moonroof, and power mirrors all work W00t!  My friend even found the euro hitch in the trunk :)  It connects like an air coupling with ball bearings that lock into place.

Engine will be coming out for a rear main seal and other such maintenance/painting of the car along with most of the interior so hopefully there is nothing some money (ok lots of money) can't fix.  If anyone has one of the pure mechanical pumps that are used on this TD sitting on a shelf somewhere let me know lol.

To get the crud cleaned out of the  pump and the rest of the Injection system what works great is called "Diesel Purge" by lubromoly The mercedes guys swear by it , I have used it on a couple of my cars and it is really strong stuff. You feed it directly into the IP through a bottle. I suspect that this stuff is quite a bit stronger than Power service or anything else on the market.

If you can't find it locally Hopefung autoparts in Richmond  BC has it in stock, I don't think it can be shipped from the US.

I can get it from my parts dude, but I fear the vane pump is actually seized up inside.  The former owner of the car was a complete waste of skin (as far as diesel engines go) and had a totally half assed wvo system installed.  As such it appears that there was little in the way of dewatering/filtering done and the *** that appeared in the bottom of the power service jug that I fed directly (with return line back to the jug) showed mucho dirt collection.

I plan on taking this car accross the country with me so I will probably end up with a full rebuild to the tune of $1K-$1200, oh well such is life with these things.

« Reply #43 on: September 06, 2007, 03:40:48 pm »
Well if you do get the IP rebuild maybe Gilles can do some tweaking to it. That would make the cost worthwhile. I would still try the Diesel purge since it is cheap , it will shake loose quite a bit of junk as well. Let us know how this is going. Cheers Dan

If I were right at the car I would be trying an electric lift pump n it right now :(  but my friend is a busy fellow with 2 jobs at the moment, so most of the trouble shooting must wait till the weekend when he has more time available.
