Does one exist? Who makes them, and does anyone know what the hitch / car is rated to tow? Sure would be nice to be able to bring some things with me and not have to wreck the inside of the vehicle.
Kind of makes it messy and hard to load the car after a good day deer hunting

I have one and so does my friend. Mine might be home made but I think my friends is a "hidden hitch"

I'll try and get a model number or something off my friends. The owners manual should have the towing capacity

I had a class I hitch on my 90 Jetta years ago. It was Reese I think. As a class I hitch, it was rated to tow 2000lbs. I can't remember what the car was rated to tow. Worked well for my little utility trailer.
If you can't find it on the Hidden Hitch website, it could be that they don't make them for the car anymore.
I'm going to be searching for one for my 97 and if I come across a listing for a mkII, I'll post it here.

I did not see one listed for the 85 golf. I am guessing that the Jetta one is a direct swap. Yes?

I have a Hidden Hitch for my big-bumpered MK2 and a Hitches-for-Less one for my small-bumpered MK2:
http://hitches4less.stores.yahoo.net/19voljetdraw.html
Couldn't find the Hidden Hitch on their site when I last checked... got mine second-hand.

Success!
I just found a place that has multiple hitches for the VW's.
http://www.hitch-web.com/default.asp
They seem to be very specific. Different hitch even between the 2 and 4 door 85 golf.
They said that the hitch capacity design was not so much based on pulling power or rear suspension, but on stopping ability. This of course based off STOCK infromation.
For my vehicle they listed the bolt on at about $140.00
150lbs tongue weight
1500lbs towing
something like a 1" receiver
They also offered a HD weld on hitch. $275 shipped Cali to Maine.
200lb tongue weight
2000lb towing
1 1/4" receiver
That sounds much better. Kind of pricey though. They said it gets welded to portions of the rear lift points, plus additional areas. The rep told me it takes his guys about two hours to get all the under coating and such off the underside where the welding needs to take place.
He also said that problems could arise with routing the stock exhaust past the hitch.
Might be more hassle than its worth to get the better hitch. Than again, going to 130+ HP with the 1.6TD takes some doing as well. Have to think about this one. :?

Get a chunk of 4" x 1/4" angle iron about 6 to 8 inches long, have shop weld in a 6" of trailer hitch stock. Bolt to bumper. Use the 2" or the 1" receiver. Remember to remove hitch when not in use, save your shins!
Ugly, yes. Works, yes as well.

I purchased a hitch from these guys few years ago--here is the page.
http://www.partsplaceinc.com/catalog/P%20Catalog%202006/index.htm
Then select Page 35 from the side menu
Mine has held up nicely--I think I paid 55 for it, plus shipping. They have used units as well.

Will a trailer hitch act as a rear sway bar? I am guessing that it would stiffen up the rear quite a bit. :?

It's not attatched to the rear beam so I don't see how it would be. The last 3 cars I bought all have trailer hitches. I'm rather excited about that. Mind you the last one was just bolted through the trunk floor  yeah it split the floor
