Hi All:
Picked up a '90 Jetta TD and everything is pretty good except the water seperator under the right rear passenger floorpan. It needs to be changed. At first glance, I think I'd rather be at the dentist. Crimped connectors etc.
Anyone ever change one of these? Are there other fittings I can use to install the new one? Thanks in advance

your best bet is to simply bypass it. Those wires that go to it are for tripping the glow plug light when the unit needs to be drained (although they rarely work). It is unrelated to the actual glowplug system. Cut and tape them so they don't short out.
I bypassed mine 10 000 kms ago and have not had a problem since. It's basically just a filter and after 500 000+ kms they tend to clog up and cause all sorts of problems.
Basically every fuel filter (the one in the engine bay) as a water seperator in it that is ample. Mk2s are the only generation of vw diesels to have the extra water seperator which tells me that they really are not that crucial.
I used old fuel diesel lines from a parts car to bypass the filter and suprisingly very little fuel drained out when I cut the lines.

remove it from the car.. make it look like it was never there, newer ones dont even come with it, I cant imagine that is a part that's listed on a safety inspection

As long as you aren't leaking fuel and the lines aren't balloning you should be fine. They probably won't even know it's missing.
Theres a chance the bolts will tear out from the sheet metal of your floor rather then removing which leaves some big holes, so you may want to prepare for some floor repair.
BTW the seperator is right under the rear bench so you don't need to worry about hitting anything if you need to do any drilling. I'd pop out the rear seat just to be safe though

Mine is just hanging under the car unhooked. I wondered what it was.
