So yeh,,,,, SOmetimes they work sometimes they don't....(they don't work... simultaneously)
Wipers....... the heater blower motor fan......
I am thinking possibly bad ground...... I figured... I would post...
thinking this might be a common problem(in the moisture belt)......
I don't have a wiring schematic at hand.........
Thanks, MOnst

Might be the x-relay. The x line running across the top in the bentley electrical schematics.
AKA the load reduction relay.
It shuts things like that off while the starter is turning.

They don't cost much.....
Maybe I should get one........ wait of it to screw up agai.....nnnnnn..
and then plug the new one in..........
Is this as good as it gets,,, regarding trouble shooting it...
the worst is that...... it happens when you really need the wipers or the defrost.....
that is was is so aggravtin....gggg..
thanks, Monst

Monst, each fall you should take some time to pull all the fuses and relays out of the fuse box and clean the contacts. It is wet down there and they just corrode if you don't check on them annually. Keeps those wipers and blower running without those: Oh come on!!!! momments.

Good Point Orc....
Will take a gander at them while I am there...
Here is another interesting Anomaly ....(electrical... Anomaly)
I think perhaps this too could relate to the xcontact relay...(maybe)...
Engine is off....
place key in ignition....
Glow up the plugs......
Glow plug lights brightly....
start engine........
engine is running.......(key is in run position)
Glow plug light is still lit....(but not as bright)

Glow plug relay stays on for about 20 seconds on my MK1, then goes off. That is when I turn the key. I never watched it if I turned it early. I do have an amp and volt gauge in my car and I can tell when the relay kicks out AFTER I have the car running. Both jump visibly about 5 seconds after the car is running.
I also hear it click out.

This one seems backwards....(mine)..........
I am going to go out and do it in the dark...... see what is going on......
will report back.........
i would think that once it is cranking.... light can go out..... and then after start..... run.... remains out....(run circuit no power.. part of glw plg circuit)
How is the glow plug light tied in with the actual glow plug circuit?
(IE: some resistance is overcome and then it lights... etc etc.....)

I think the dash light is controlled by the relay.
Not sure why it stays on.

yeah
Turn key to run position...
wait for light......
boink! lilght is on.... turn to start position....
light is on.....
run position.... light is on but not as bright...........
So the same relay for the glow plug circuit is responsible for the glow plug indicator light as well?
X-contact relay------------------ unrelated...? correct?

Yeah, I don't think the x-relay has anything to do with the glow plugs.
I like an additional manual push button switch that lets me glow the plugs for as long as I want,..
during cranking or after start.

This load reduction relay....
Where is it located...... 1992 jetta..
It is not an intermittent problem anymore..........(IT IS PERMANENT)
Yeah, it involves heater-fan motor, wipers... and the tunes.....
was having a quirky day(intermittent) with this issue...... and was using wipers....
and wipers just stopped in the middle of travel......
No fan motor for heat..... and no Tunes..........
Thanks, Monst

All that sounds like a problem of no power to the fuses. I would be checking the ignition switch wiring. The heat, the tunes and, the wipers are all different fuses so being affected in a similar nature means finding the common element between them. That to me is the main power.
Big red wires on the fuse box and coming from the key. Thankfully on the older MK1's I own there is one big plug that I can get at from under the dash just by removing the steering column cover off the bottom. I can push or pull on it and get a meter on it when I need to. I am not sure yours is that easy.
That is where I would be starting.
