how would a 1.6TD (tuned) do behind say a small 2wd Toyota pickup with an OD automatic? Any idea? I've heard conflicting info about diesels and automatics. I heard they suck up too much power and that they work good together because the turbo will stay under boost while it shifts through the gears. Any thoughts?
Well, I'm guessing your Toyota is ~2700 lbs, so moving the extra weight and going through the auto tranny might yield the same performance as a NA mk1? I was thinking doing that swap with my W40 tranny/3.73 (I think) rear end when my 22r dies (never?) and I'd probably have to used a TD just to get NA performance based on comparing the gearing and weight.
vw rabbit- d-3.89,1-3.45,2-1.75,3-1.06,4-.71 155-80-13, 2000lbs
toyota pu- d-3.73,1-3.29,2-2.04,3-1.39,4-1 195-75-14, 2700lbs
Rpm, going up a gear in 15mph increments.

Now the 22r makes ~130 ft/lbs of torque at ~3k rpm, but the 1.6l makes much less. The tdi in the dyno thread only makes ~80 ft/lbs at ~3k rpm, so using a tuned TD will probably yield the same numbers a 22r does, with a much flatter torque curve.

Depending how tuned the 1.6 of course, but I had a 86' 2wd auto 22re toy pu, and many 1.6td's in verious states of tune, and I would say that a mildly tuned 1.6td would be just as quick as the stock 22re with better fuel economy.
that is what I was hoping to hear. I am rebuilding the engine now, not sure where I am putting it. The bottom end is done, stock except Gapless rings. Im going through the head now, maybe do a little port and polish. I am waiting on my turbo rebuild kit and may send my IP to Giles if it would make the truck more driveable. I will probally upgrade the injectors and add an intercooler.[/quote]
With all of that it will easly out pull a stock or even mid modified 2re (rv cam, header, exhaust) I think you will enjoy it. The Giles pump is really worth the money.
you think a stock 4x4 is too much with the above mentioned mods? Would a 5-speed be better? I already own a 4x4 but figured it would be too heavy (3700 lbs)
I think it would be just fine.
There are some things that you can do to help the shifting on that auto as well, but I can't find the link's off hand. It has to do with controling the tq converter lockup and such. In any case I wouldn't hesitate to run it.
I'd be able to handle highway speeds? Thanks for the replys, I have never driven a 1.6TD, I'm a noob
and then some! I could wrap my speedo @200km/h+ in my jetta with similar mods, so I am sure even with the added weight and drag, you would be able to drive comfortably at any hwy speeds.
