Been awhile since I've been on the forum, my 81 Caddy has been sitting for a couple years waiting for attention following a disastrous head rebuild on the original 1.6.
I bought a "1Y" 1.9 na replacement engine from Quality German recently. I'd like to get a Bentley manual that covers the 1Y, as it is not just an over-sized 1.6. Also, need to know where to get parts for this thing, it seems these engines are used in Europe, but not here. I understand 1Y's are closely related to the AAZ, is this so? I need some of the external bolt-on stuff, ie water pump, pulleys, hoses, etc; anyone know if AAZ stuff is usable for 1Y, and what Bentley manual(s) cover the 1Y?
Largely AAZ far as I can tell, I un-turbo'd my AAZ and put a GTI exhaust and euro 1Y intake on it, rest of it's 1.6 stuff, v-belts, accessories, inj pump, waterpump, etc.
PCV setup is a mix of TDI and AAZ/ABA. Hard to find real info on the 1Y in the US but it really seems to just be an un-turbo'd AAZ, cam and compression might be different
but I think I read they were the same even at some point. I stuck with v-belts so I could worry less about the crank snout.
i think valve stem is 7mm and is a bit shorter stroke
Valve stem depends on year, just like other vw engines. Con rods and pistons are different than AAZ, no other major differents internally. Con rod bearings are same as 1,6td.
