I drive a well maintained, slightly modified Mk2 1992 Jetta Turbo Diesel. Suddenly, today, I look in my rearview mirror and notice I am putting out some killer blue smoke under acceleration. When I get home I got a bud to rev the engine and I went behind the car and smelled the exhaust. Didn't smell like oil (thank god). Smelled like diesel. So I assume I've got a bunch of unburned diesel messing things up.
What does it sound like to you guys? An injector stuck open? A problem with the pump? Any other thoughts?
Any possible fixes?
does the car feel the same? is power down at all?
Start with the basics first,so you don't overlook anything.
It could be oil,or it could be fuel.
Check the air and fuel filters first.A plugged air or fuel filter could do it.
Start by inspecting for excessive blow-by,pumping oil up past the CCV,and into the engine. Also check the turbo,to make sure it isn't pumping oil into the intake.Removing the turbo to intake boot will allow you to inspect for oil.
Check compression, belt timing, pump timing, ect,to make sure nothing is off.
If all that checks out, then you may have an injector or pump problem.

Car feels the exact same. No power loss at all.
do you think it could be 'bad' diesel? I'm leaning towards a bad injector... BUT you said there is no power loss which is weird. Try running a diesel additive to clean out the system
