Everyone that has a Mk1 TD Jeta knows that the rear muffler is obsolete here in North America. I found something that is the same size diameter as the OE exhaust. 1984 (only) GLI 1.8L rear muffler will work. I just installed one on my 83 TD last night. The GLI muff does have a perforated section of pipe that extends into the muffler & has a 4 way crimp on the end. This makes the flow dissapate into the packing of the muffler. I did't think this was a good idea for a diesel since the original was free flowing & Diesel soot will just clog the sound insulation. I remedied it by inserting a 25mm pipe & hitting it with a hammer till the crimp opened up. Then moved up in size with the pipe till it was open & free flowing. Sounds super quiet & it was a flawless install just like original. The GLI muff is alot longer & is round... Still fits just the same.
That will hold me over until I get some cash for the TT stainless down pipe & the full SS exhaust. $760 is alot of cash for an exhaust but it will last. If you are in North America & would like a cheap fix on the rear muffler, Ansa home page has a link to clearance specials...$25 + shipping. They are ANSA brand, Quality & not crushed bends.
Magnaflow makes some nice stainless mufflers, which flow well (straight through),and are pretty cheap. They will not be a direct fit,but any muffler shop can mount them up easily.
Yeah Yeah... but $40 shipped for a direct fit OE quality muffler & tailpipe that only took 20 minutes to install... no special tools or fabrication & I did not have the wasted time or expense of a muffler shop. It will defintely hold me over until I get the funds for a full SS setup from TT including a DP.
BTW is was 70* F here in PA today. I would have looked silly in shorts & T shirt wearing a scarf.
Good information, Thanks. I've been trying to find something for my 84 TD.
Rudy
vw pieces,
Is the Ansa part just the muffler and tailpipe only? There is no pipe in front of it, right?
The mid-pipe is available in NA, but not the rear muffler and tailpipe.
Per Bosal, there are 8 of the rear muffler/tailpipe assys. in Canada.
I'm trying to get one, but it's a PITA.
Are you pleased with your set-up, and does it fit right? Can't beat the price...
Again, specific to 83 Jetta TD.
Thanks,
Rich/ Michigan
Hey Rich,
Yes it is just the the muffler with a tailpipe attached. The muffler is round & not oval, same dia pipe & is a perfect fit. Make sure you "open it up" though as I stated in the earlier post. Otherwise I thing the diesel soot may create a problem cloging it up.
