There is a guy who sells AAZ (turbo & naturals) in CA for the last 10 years or more. Short Blocks, Long-blocks and Complete drop in engines. They are take-outs from low mileage Germany origin cars. He sells engines and transmissions.
Bought from him and am very pleased.
I dunno if its $800 worth of more torque though.. But I bet AAZ's are hard to find in Cali...

The car used to have a 1.5D and 0-100 then was about 16 seconds.
Wow, my old 1.6D was 22.5 seconds 0-100 km/h.
i was going to say that is pretty damn fast for an na diesel. im sure my rabbit can't do that. but i agree with others, a small turbo install will probably cost you half as much and give you results that are just as well. a nice little intercooler and you shouldn't have to worry about power or over heating.

That sounds about right for a mild tuned 1.5D.
What US car did the 1.9N/A come in? I thought all North American 1.9's were AAZs or TDIs.
*Edit* Oh, and I think you'll probably regret it. 63bhp vs. 69bhp from a 1.6TD for less money.

We didn't even get the AAZ. The only 1.9 displacement diesels we got are TDIs; 1Z, AHU, ALH, pumpe düse, that's it.

James T, 69hp from a stock TD.. way easier to bump them up quite a bit with near free mods.

I have heard that the guy you speak of, quality then German then autoparts in southern california has done some people dirty. His feedback on ebay is good but if you read reviews in the yellow pages, people think less than stellar things about him.
that is where the 1.9 I am considering buying came from.

I got my AAZ from Quality German Auto. $2700 + I bought a new German water pump & tensioner. I did it because there were no other options for getting a low mileage AAZ motor. He had plenty of motors to choose from & you could see them run on youtube before purchasing. I'm not trying to act as a sales person. He was very personable & seemed like an honest guy. He did recommend just putting it straight in, but I know better than that with ANY used motor. I wanted some of that 'free' HP & to go through it to make sure everything was all on the up n up, and it mostly was. Just like any motor that has been run for almost 60,000 mi, I expected some of the parts to be gunked up & they were, especially the EGR. I plan to rectify all the things & put it n clean, drive it easy for a long time. Who knows what will really happen?
But fully back on topic, I would not go back to an NA.

From what I've read the 1.9 has a better torque curve (lower) than the 1.6 by a good bit. If you don't buy the 1.9NA send me a pm and let me buy it. I agree with most of the suggestions on here though. The the 1.6, if it hasn't been modified already, might get you over the hills well enough after a little tweaking to keep you satisfied.
I just live about 5 hours from you up 101. If you don't buy the 1.9NA send me a pm and let me buy it. I'd buy from the place down in LA but its way to far to drive...on top of the prices he wants/needs.

It wasnt too bad - I'd turned the fuel up a lot, had a bigger air intake and it was infront of an AUG trans (stock mk1 90's cabby trans) which has close 3/4/5 gears. actually that trans really suits an n/a 1.5 excpet when you are on the highway. Accelerates well though.
Anyway, of the 5 odd 1.5D's that I've had, that particular one was by far the best. I think it was just 'right'... like compression, valve seats, balancing, etc.

i LOVED my AUG attached to my diesel engine.. it REALLY ripped with that trans.. but the ACN trans is nicer to drive on the highway..

I am running an AUG Trans jus by coincidence, it makes in town driving tolerable but in the hills it seems like I need to downshift two gears at once to maintain speed. I thought about a .71 5th swap but the truck has a hard enough time with the .89 OD it has now. It could be my flatland coast down hill gear maybe?

a .71 5th gear will suck in an AUG trans, it will be a HUGE jump from 4th to 5th.. its a pretty big jump from 4th to 5th in an ACN, and they came with a .75 5th gear.. the AUG has a LOWER 4th gear, so the jump will be EVEN BIGGER!
if you have trouble maintaining speed as it is, making your truck even MORE gutless doesnt sound like a very good idea..
how often are you coasting down hill? having a gear specifically for coasting, makes no sense to me..
you just need more power.. i have an ACN trans behind my diesel.. i can still go up hills however fast i want..
can hit a hill @ 40mph, spool up the boost, and be going 90 at the top, all while leaving it in 5th gear.
boost is boobs!

Yea, I have avoided doing anything to the truck as of yet. One thing will get cancelled by another. For now I'm going to sit tight, bills have eaten up my project money for now.
