Turbo choice for 1.6td

Due to circumstances, I'm dropping a 1.6td with a gov. mod ip into my 84 jetta with auto trans. (had to nuke the aaz idea)
I'm going to use a straight 2.5 inch exhaust ( maybe with a small muffler to tone it down), maybe an intercooler - maybe.
I have both a k3 & a k14? I do mostly city - and sometimes short range highway driving But also do a 1200km straight run every 4 months.
And the right turbo to use is? Would the intercooler change my turbo choice?

I wanna say AAZ due to the fact you do a lot of city driving, and then smaller turbo would help with spool. As far as the straight run goes, that sounds like mostly highway, where the K03 might be a hair restrictive, but only if accelerating. EGTs may be high if pushing 14+ psi boost through it, but the intercooler will help keep that down.
The K14, on the other hand, will take longer to spool up if going through the city, but on the highway it'll be better than the K03. You can push a bit more boost through it too, but I don't know how much though, somebody else should make that claim
Both turbos will see high EGTs on hard acceleration because they are so small, but the K14 should see less. What exactly are your plans for the car, warmed-over daily or more sporty? And exactly what ratio of city-to-highway?

I run a TDI K03 in my 1.6td right now. I rarely see temps over 1000, even when running hard. I do have an intercooler so that helps for sure. The K03 spools 10psi off idle practically and gives good power to 15-17 psi. It does hang around 7-10 at 75+mph and that keeps the temps up a bit all the time, but that could also be because I have a crap boost controller.
I have no real life experience with the K14 but because its a bit larger it will probably be better on long runs and compared to a T3 or K24 it wont have much lag at all.
K03 for more spirited off-the-line acceleration but loss of top end, K14 (in this comparison) for more at the back end.
The one down side to the K03, if you pull one from a TDI, it is an underhung turbo and routing pipe work to either an intercooler or to the manifold is harder plus making a super custom exhaust is a must. The K14 would be able to use Stock TD bits.

Auto trans?
T3, hands down...
you can spool that thing against the torque converter..

Thanks for all the advice!
I guess to clarify a few things - I'll be driving 80 % city,
I really just plan to go warmed up will be my daily - new downpipe, 2.5 inch exhaust with a low flowmuffler. ( I ran a aaz with straight exhaust - too loud vs my tdi with just cat on and then straight pipe), basic ip fuel screw stuff, and maybe a low buck intercooler. Came with coilovers, will make up stress bars and some poly bushings.

The turbo choice depends on your transmission and tire choice, for that 1200km+ drive you do yourgonna need it to be capable.
Now that being said my ko3 m-tdi behimd my ACN trans has no problem pushing 10+ on the highway for hours at a time. Non intercooled.
If you do most of the drive in town like i do you will love the ko3 like i do lol. Here is how I see it.. Whats the need for top end power if you can make the same down low?? I will put money on my brothers stock boost leveled ko3 against any of these BIG boost engines. I gurantee he is making way more than 150 ft.lbs of tq before 2350rpm. Shift at 3000, what restriction is there to a ko3 at this level?? None.
You will love the KO3, I gurantee it.

You can not use the diesel auto starter and an AAZ. It does not fit.
You said K3 in your original post. Is that a K03 or a T3?
You aren't doing any racing, just your typical point a to point b style driving right?
What tranny do you have, what sized tires and in what car?

Not sure on the turbo - will check - but I'm pretty sure K03?
Lol - no, no racing - just want some get up and go with reliability. ( with the factory auto -

You basically have the same car as my mom then, except I deleted all that turbo junk from it. You'll be reved pretty high on the highway so I would probably go with a K14 over a K03.

Damn, i feel old as I'm probably as old as your mom also

I plan to eventually drop in a 5 speed - but its just not in the cards right now.
How high does your mom's diesel rev on the highway? I don't do a lot of highway - but at least twice a year I do a 1200 km one way run.

Well then how would u start one? I forgot the newer blocks have a different shape in the back, so what was your solution there?

There is no tach in it but mathematically speaking it spins about 3300 at 100 or 110. We drive a 1000km trip several times a year. It's noisy but it's not unbearable. Plus we do a lot of short (under 100kms) trips every year.
Trev0rbr my solution was to use a 1.6. On her next car I will use the AAZ engine but instead use the 096 auto tranny that puts the starter in the same place as on a manual car. I did try grinding the back of the block down and I took a fair bit of material off but it still never fit, and wasn't even close.

So u never did get an aaz in it, I thought u did. If you read b4s thread on vwvortex there was a guy with an 010 bolted to a 1.8t in a drag car he had some adapter and used some other starter, it all looked crazy but it must have worked.

I don't do a lot of highway, but maybe I'll have to go to the 75 series tires to get those revs down. haha
thanks for the info

Ahh yes.. the AUTO trans.. That is gonna have your revs substantially higher than most standard trannies.
Even with the 3.41 R/P you will still turn 3145 at 100 km/h.. So I mean that is totally acceptable RPMS and in fact.. I think they get better mileage between 3000-3400 than most think they do. Our 1988 1.6TD cruises 3250rpm at 120 km/h (typical highway average speed) and it is where it returns the best miles driven for fuel used of 5.5l/100km. I tracked this average for the whole summer of 2012, on the same 100km a day drive on the exact same route.
SO my summary on your diesel and auto combination is, I recant half of my previous comment. The k03 will run out of breath at about ~4000rpm.. but it should never need to be that high with its ability to spool so low. Intercooled it should have no problem spinning those RPMS for any amount of time. The k03's are a very tough and well built charger. I spin mine at the same RPMS running my car at like 130 on the highway.
