idk if anyone has touched on this, but the stock crank nose, and crank sprocket are WEAK. nowheres near strong enough to drive a supercharger, not even a little guy like what you got. once you twist the crank sprocket out of time, its lights out for the engine. the valves get friendly with the pistons, and then that head is potentially toast..
be sure to take this into consideration before supercharging..
Andrew (libbydiesel) has made up a broach, and fixture for it, so that the crank can be broached in the car, without much disassembly..
you can broach the crank, and use the TDI crank sprocket, thats much tougher..
That crossed my mind I must admit. I think the turbo will be staying as I've seen a few dead AAZ's due to the failure. I guess the 1.6 is just as prone if you go serp belt setup too even without a supercharger?
you CAN make the setup somewhat reliable, but its not worth it in my opinion. there just isnt enough mechanical contact to the crank sprocket for me to be running anything more than a big alternator off the crank pulley..
Is it just me or does the number 4 cylinder have a crack between the prechamber and the exhaust valve? I hope it's just an illusion?
I'm definitely going to check next time I'm in the shed.
Well guys the truck has been on the road for a month now. I'm enjoying it as a N/A diesel at the moment. Really good on the fuel too. My fresh TD block is now on the stand and hopefully I'll be ordering my fresh piston circlips, crank bolt, thrust washers, big end and main shells next week if funds allow. Hopefully next spring it'll be in and running!
No progress so far due to starting Uni but I have decided to sell the Caddy due to lack of rear seating lol. However I maybe getting a mk2 GTD on 170k so this engine will get built as a spare.
Still have not checked out the crack from the pre cup to the valve seat on number 4. My mate has a GTD'd mk1 and is going through crack worries at the mo.
I'm wondering if the its the cam and the valves that are the difference between NA and TD heads? If so I guess I could use my NA head if I use TD spec valves and used the TD cam and its lifters in there?

the exhaust valves are sodium filled..
the intake valves are the same..
ive had NO ISSUES running a n/a head on a fairly modified 1.6D
FWIW, you can use the n/a head no problem as it sits..
the biggest difference, is the materials they cast the TD and n/a heads out of..
