the "bell housing" is actually the trans case, in all actuality..

no.... the whole case needs changed over... this requires skill and shims to set the bearing preset on the diff and ring/pinion .. not many have the shims...
yes very few mk2 had 4 speed.. but in 85 a few did..
in late 83 they added the 3 nostrils to the tranny... in prep for the mk2... by then the ff was now a fn i beleive... ff is like 78-80... then fn 81-84... the 1.7 gassers and diesels had them.. 1.8 got close gear ratio..

It bolts through the two halves of the differential case.

yes, yes it does. Im going to avoid possible destroying something, so im going to just throw the AVX in and run it for now, while Junk Yard hunting, i just bought two new axles 90mm so with the likelyness of me finding a diesel trans being slim to none im just going with the AVX. Thats the reason i wanted to stay away from the gasser transmission, i would have to replace the axles and then the flywheel and clutch that i just bought to..... so i just will be patient and wait for a good diesel trans

Here's the ACN AVX and FN ratios copied from A2resource.com
The AVX and FN has 90 mm axles, the ACN has 100 mm axles (90 mm with a ?, not sure what that means), all 3 have different speedo gears from each other.
How difficult would it be to make a mount for the shift linkage to install the FN in your Jetta? Per the ttools calculator, the AVX at 65 mph will be doing 3067 rpm while the FN will be doing 2657 rpm at the same speed. That's a drop of 410 RPM. Is that worthwhile to you to do all that work?

If you have both transmissions already out.. you could easy see what needs to be done to the FN to make it fit in place of the Avx.. Any machine shop or even you might be able tp make it happen easily

ACN is 90mm.. 100% positive..
i had to swap it when i dropped one in my GTI for the 100mm axles.
the reason for the different speedo gears, is the different final drives..
AVX has 4.25:1 and green gear?
FN has 3.89:1 and white gear.
ACN has 3.67:1 and red gear.
and that bracket, the one that needs bosses on the trans to install? thats an ENGINE MOUNT, not a shift linkage bracket..
you NEED THAT BOLTED ON REAL GOOD.
since the FN has no mounting bosses, it seems basically impossible to install it..
an ACN-style trans is cheap, easy to get, and drops right in, no messing around..
so, either keep that FN around for a mk1 swap, or else sell/trade it for something better.

Also remember that it is an FN if you do decide to sell. Their ratios will bring top dollar

yeah ima sell it

I sat down and looked both trans over today and have decided that it wouldnt be worth the time and effort to make it wook and then possibly have problems later down the line. would have been nice.
I will run the AVX for the time being until i source another transmission at a later point, since i do no highway driving really not at that much of a loss plus the trans was free. I would like to get a chunk of $$ for other mods, Maybe a giles pump or something.
Thank you all for the input and this place is great.

Selling one transmission will get you 1/5th of the way closer to a Giles pump.

So, would the ACN be a good choice for my Ecodiesel with the governor mod? How many HP and ft lbs pf torque would you say one need to drive an ACN and not be a dog?

well, like ive mentioned a MILLION TIMES...
these ACN style trannies came STOCK behind 85hp gas engines..
and they are not a dog in any way. i like the way my GTI drives better with the ACN, than with the 9A in it..

I have a lead on an ACN and may go check it out tomorrow. It is off the car and supposedly has 150k on it. How does one check out a transmission on the bench? Can all the gears be engaged and I turn the main shaft by hand and watch the axle flanges spin? I will bring a dial indicator and make sure the main shaft is not bent.
What's a reasonable price for an ACN? And it should bolt right into my Ecodiesel (replacing the AVX) with no modifications or re-work right?
