I see alot of posts about people making adjustments to gain some power, but i have not seen anything for non turbo's, just the TD.
Is this a lose cause and only for a turbo?
The main issue is that without the turbo there can be no additional air to accompany increased fuel. This increases combustion heat which can cook the engine on a long grade. That's not to say you can't increase fuel at all, but you really need to install an egt gauge before you make anything more than sublte changes.
I just turboed my 1.9 straight diesel. Went from a factory 64 bhp slug to a 115 hp match for any 8 valve GTi. Dont know about the 16 valve, never drove one. Easily a match for a std 90 bhp TDi.
Motor was a 1Y, luckily just minus the turbo and TD pump. Fitted the TD pump, new Garrett Gt15, intercooler. 160 bar injectors, GTD boost pin and lid, 1Z A3 intercooler, self made intake, exhaust, boost controller. Its nimble, has torque and likes to rev to 4000+. Very little smoke too, but I machined parts of the turbo myself and the boost controller may account for the power delivery without excessive smoke.
Either buy the turbo parts, or simply tune your n/a like it where a TD and watch the EGT's. Unless you put a turbo on your n/a, your limited to only screwing open your n/a pump. It will smoke like crazy though !

exhaust gas temperature. under load your motor will be burning more fuel and making more heat with the turbo.. so you have the possibility of cooking your motor if the EGTs get too high.

Yes, I have an Autometer Pyrometer Kit (EGT gauge) complete with thermocouple (temperature sensor). It is not that cheap (~$200 CAD regular) but it's a very important gauge, the life of your engine will depend on it if you're going to do some tuning. My gauge reads 0-1,600 degrees Fahrenheit. For your engine I'd probably avoid excess of 1,200 degress F sustained, but someone else may suggest a different max temp.
My thermocouple is installed in the exhaust manifold, there should be a few pictures in this forum of installed examples. Try searching. If you have difficulties finding pics/info on EGT let me know and I'll post some links, but if you practice using the Forum search it'll be more convenient for you in the end.
