So i have just run some Diesel Purge through my 79 rabbit (1.6 NA). When I removed the soft lines from the hard supply/return lines i failed to make note of which hard line was which. What is the easiest way of sorting this out? From my parts book schematic it almost looks as though it doesn't matter....

I've always wondered which way was correct, but I've run the soft returns both ways (left to right & right to left) and it doesn't seem to matter...
Cool. Well. I'm going to go with that for now. The only thing i could imagine is different would be that the return would be at the top of the tank and the supply pulling from the bottom, but if that was the case, you would have found out pretty quickly.
i can go look for you, but i'm sure it matters, i don't see why you removed the lines back where you did, you are talking about the 2 metal lines that are behind the strut tower at the firewall right?
I think I misunderstood you, hehe. You mean the supply and return lines coming from the tank. I'm sure it depends on your car BUT there should be check valves in line that only lets the fuel flow one way... so if you have it wrong you should know. I seem to recall that the supply line was a slightly larger diameter on my mk2 Golf...
on my 81 rabbit, the line closest to the firewall is the supply

Correct. I removed those two lines to place them them both into the can of Diesel Purge, was that incorrect?
