For those in the UK, the Castrol fully synthetic stuff 75w85 GL4 is very good. Available from Halfrauds.

DON'T USE GL5! Unless hearing the gentle fizz of dissolving brass is your thing!

The redline is really excellent, fixes that 2nd gear crunch they all seem to get with age a lot of times.

I've used AMSOIL Syncromesh (75W90 I think) in 3 trannies now (02A, 020 and a honda piece of something) and it has worked great for me. Not the cheapest stuff around but pretty reasonable for a good quality full synthetic

Exactly 2.0 litres from dry to full,

Check what gearbox you have, VW took a few years to move the fill plug to the right height for the Mk2 Golf, get it wrong and kill the box.

020 transmission lube spec is 1.9L for Golf/Jetta 80w90 GL4. 2L fits nice I run 75w90 Castrol full synthetic because we run it in bulk here at the shop. I found the full synthetic shifts smoother.

75w90 is the spec on the earlier 020 though just in case someone was confused.

Thanks very much for the links they are great, annoying can only find redline 75w90 in 950ml bottles, which would mean having to buy 3 and having a load spare at around £50 which is pretty expensive!
May take a look at the castrol stuff at halfrauds as I have a trade card so should be cheaper!
I have the dreaded 2nd gear crunching, what is the best grade oil to try and smooth the gearbox up? 75w90 or 75w85?
Im a sprayer and havnt dealt with transmission oil I must admit so thanks for the help

theres your second gear crunch fix.. the suspended moly lube additive also cant hurt. i used it in my trans when i changed the oil. made it feel like new.

Yeah I did see the reply, however as I mentioned id have to buy 3 bottles of Redline as it only comes in 950ml bottles and it would end up costing a small fortune.
Is Redline the onyl oil that would fix this issue, or would Castrol also fix the issue as it is more readily available in the UK.
Thanks

is a shot glass full of oil really something worth worrying about? 2 us quarts is less than 2 litres.. the spec on thes trannies is 4.2 pints. or 2.1 qts. thats a little under 2 litres IIRC..
a litre is 1000ml... 950ml is pretty darn close. i wouldnt buy a whole spare jug to pour a shot glass full out of it.
ive heard that royal purple takes care of the crunch too..
