YESSSS!!!1!!11! It actually drives!!!!
« on: February 26, 2010, 05:32:12 pm »
The car finally started!!! yayyyy. And i even took it out for a little boot in the stormy weather of canada. Just one problem... Nothing on my cluster works, and my rad fan doesn't work... Any suggestions? are there certain relays i need to look for?

I can post up a video of it running if people want.

Its a mk2 golf with a 1.9td, t3 turbo swap.

Of course we want videos :)

For the rad fan I would start by jumping the thermo switch on the rad and seeing what happens.

Sounds good. Ill get a vid as soon as i get it to stop leaking coolant haha. And i also just noticed the plug on the bottom of the rad is a 3 wire plug, but on the mk3 harness its a 2 wire plug. I cant splice it in so what can i do?

And by jumping the thermo switch is that just to see if the rad fan turns on?

Also im having to jump the glow plugs everytime i start it. Apparently im missing a 350 dollar relay that turns them on right when i open the door? I was thinking i should just cut the wire and add a toggle so i can turn the plugs on and off. But im gonna head to the junk yard on monday and see what i find.

As for my dash and heater core? I dont have one. Ask me how fun that is driving in negative weather.

Check out vince waldon's pimp your glowplugs for how to do them. Don't use a regular toggle that is on/off. I did for about a year and it was fine, then I forgot about running them once. It was a little warmer out and I didn't think that I had used them. I left it on for about 5 miles and had to replace all my glow plugs  >:(

Yeah apparently it starts warming the glow plugs right when you open the driver door to make it more convenient... i just wish the price was that convenient.

Ill check it out later today. If i dont find the relay at the wreckers ill have to do it.

i wired mine up on a toggle switch, but then that is hooked to the stock GP controller, then the GP controller works the ford constant duty relay.

My alt is charging the battery. Im also trying to wire up all the lights. And im using the mk3 wiring harness and splicing in the mk2 plugs. I had all the running lights working then 2 wires touched and it shorted. Half the lights went out so i changed the fuse and only the back break light came on... Now the front signal and cluster wont light. And i can not for the life of my get the headlights to work. I wish i had a speedo and cluster.

I drove it to work cause i had no other car and it drove Amazing. Turbo spools so nice and quick. It pulls really hard on stock boost to. Then when i started it 20 minutes ago to come home it would barely start. It was burning alot of oil, white smoke was pouring out and if you accelerated it would studder. It finally started up fne and i drove it home.

You should rewire your front headlights through a better relay, I have mine running through 2 relays direct from the battery, they are super bright now. I just traced the wiring back to the OEM relay for the lights, and I used a relay for the regular lights and another for the high beams. Now I have to wire a set of driving lights in, and I'll be happy. I was also thinking if the 2 wire plug would fit, its easier then splicing to make things work. Are you using the MK2 body harness and the MK3 engine harness? Also is it the MK3 tranny? IIRC one is mechanical and the MK3 has a digi speedo. DOes your alt have the W terminal? Sometimes when they get dirty, they don't send, it could also be shorted.

Im using the full mk3 harness body and motor. Im just splicing in the mk2 plugs. What do you mean run it through a better relay, Do you have any pics for reference. Sorry to be a noob, im more of a residential electrician.

And i am using the mk3 tranny aswell. all i need is my cluster to work, my headlights and my rad and im gonna drive it everyday.

But it keeps having reallllly bad cold starts. It burns alot of white smoke and barely runs for like 5 minutes till its warmed up. Ill get a video tomorrow.

This: http://www.4crawler.com/Diesel/CheapTricks/Headlights.shtml#OnLineOrdering would be perfect, I got one of these in my rabbit (I didn't get mine from this guy though, wish I had) and the lights got brighter and of course the switch will last longer now too.

'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.
