I'm 99% sure some joker thought the old school thread-in cap on my rabbit was cute and swiped it for no good reason. There is a 1% chance I left it at the gas station, but I know where I filled up, it was only a day ago, and the guys there know me and wouldn't feed me BS about not having found one.
Either way I need a new one.
Problem is, I never paid a whole lot of attention to the anatomy of my cap, and now I find there's all kinds of different ones for sale... and none of them reference whether it'll fit a diesel car (I feel like our filler holes are different--fatter--and don't have that little metal flap, right? Do these things matter to the cap?). The car's an 81 square headlight (westy) rabbit (diesel). I have no recollection of whether it was threaded or just had tabs or what. The hole itself has two little notches at 3 and 6 o'clock. I have no reason to think the car doesn't have the original fuel tank.
Can anyone tell me if the cap sold for any old 81 rabbit will fit, and if not, where I can find a diesel one?
The car lives outside and is my only transportation, so it's got a sock stuffed in there, but it looks like ass and I don't imagine seals too well.

I stopped in in person at the gas station this evening (I'd called on the phone before and been told they hadn't found one) and, lo and behold, there is my cap. So crisis averted.
I am curious, now, though--the MK1 gasser cap is different or the same?

I've never actually tried swapping gas to diesel caps but I would suspect they are the same. Obviously the tab vs threaded ones will not interchange. One thing to be aware of is that the diesel needs a vented cap and most gas ones are not vented.

Come to think of it, a few years ago I left mine on the car roof and drove off, so I swiped it from my gasser parts rabbit. I don't know if it's vented or not but it's work fine all along.......then I did the same thing a month or two later but then I pedal biked up and down the road until I found it

I was informed that the locking caddy cap was the same for diesel and gas ?
If not I will drill a vent hole in my cap...

I have an 82 US Rabbit diesel out in my dooryard if anyone needs a fuel cap.
I haven't studied the mk1 fuel tank, it may be vented some other way then the cap.
I removed the charcoal canister in the LH fender, there was a line from the filler to this canister and return to a Y connector.
Iam not sure if diesel models had this also ?

my rabbit cap has no vents on it, its the kind you turn a quarter turn, pull it out some, then turn it another quarter turn.

There's a vent hose that goes into the right side frame rail, it's weird though, with the tank under lung pressure the vent barely hisses at all
