if you machine a vw turbine housing to fit the merc center section then it will fit perfectly. otherwise you have to use a standard t3 manifold.

The turbo lag is too big on the SD (we upgrade to VTG), can you imagine how slow the 1.6 will spool this turbo.
In my opinion its not worth the work. Try to adapt and operate a VTG.

It's not a standard t3 flange on the Mercedes, you"ll need an adopter to go from the mercedes OEM flange to a regular t3

ok thanks for the replies.
is there any stock turbo that would be an upgrade for the 1.6?
what about 1.9td turbo? could i just swap out the manifold and turbo?
i just want to find something a little bigger from a junk yard and not give up any lag,

at this point im running stock, i dont know how much that is... 8psi?
im planning on mildly polishing the intake and exhaust mani and head.
This is going to be a daily driver, and since im doing a whole engine rebuild id like to have a little more power.
i need some schooling on turbos, im new to diesel as well.
i dont want to rape the engine with extreme boost but i wanna have a little more give in her.
help me out here dudes.
cheers

i do believe stock engines can hold 13-15 psi pretty reliably, from what I have heard.
plus it will make the turbo actually more powerful then at higher boost. It will be very close to it's sweet spot. and will love it, and last forever. lol

that wounds pretty good, is there any way of installing a boost controller? or is that too much wiring?

I couldn't agree more with Andrew.
The Stock turbos are way over sized, a smaller turbo will net you more usable power..
The k14 as mentioned is a great choice (if you can find one) as is the k03.
Speaking from experience here

I have a turbo from a 1992 300D 2.5 and an exhaust manifold for an 8V VW that claimed to have a T3 flange, and their vastly different.
T3 flange isn't square, the merecedes is. The benz is also alot smaller of a flange.

alright thanks for the info everybody. what cars have stock k14 or k03?
and how do i know what i have right now? its a 1.6 td?
edit: also i would like to know what id have to do to install boost pressure and exhaust temp gauges. i need the thermocouple and sending units right? would i have to drill holes in the mani fold or downpipe for that? or is there a spot where i can just bolt them in?
cheers & peace
