im rebuilding my 1.6td and will be doing some standard mods to handle more than stock boost. my goal is 30 psi daily. now id like to go vnt. will a vnt17 be able to give me what i want. also what would be a good standard turbo for my 1.6 to get to my 30 psi peak without over working the turbo. also been looking at compoud turbos as a thought. ive searched and searched but alot of the builds i see are aaz's or referring to mercedes or trucks. what would be a good turbo combo big and small to get my 30 psi as soon as possible? thanks for any ifo.

30psi will kill a VNT17 in due time. GT2056V is your baby... baby. Jeep liberty or mercedes 320CDI for the north american market.
That or a K03 K26 combo pack.

If you want 30psi reliably you're going to need compounds or find a Holset HX20. Garrett and KKK turbos just aren't setup for high boost numbers.
A VNT17 would be good for the HP turbo, maybe an HX25 or HY30 for the LP turbo.

ok well im thinking compound setup. this car is just for fun and if it breaks...well it breaks big deal. so is 30 psi doable on a 1.6td with arp studs, metal gasket, gasser manifold, nice sized intercooler and giles pump? and id be running a egt guage ofcourse. the block and pistons would be newly rebuilt with stock stuff. fresh pistons and bearings. stock crank and rods. thankyou for any info.

While experimenting with the mechanical VNT control on my car I have seen 30 psi on a couple of occasions. That's too much to ask of a VNT15 and I have dialed it way back now.
But let me tell you what, an engine built just as you described with that boost level LAYS DOWN THE BOOGIE

Nice thing about the vnt15 is that you can find them for cheap (seen many for $100) and you can abuse the snot out them and if they break it it doesn't matter. As long as you stop the runaway in time.

stop the runaway? what about a vnt exploding makes the engine runaway? shaft breaking and dumping oil into the intake housing?

they are basically made of unobtanium. i think they came mostly on machinery.

ok i need to start shopping for turbos for a compound build. 30psi will be the main daily psi goal. i need ideas or proven setups for some compound setups. and keep in mind im from california...usa....so we dont have all the random diesels that you have across the pond.

and with compound turbos, come bent rods, blown head gaskets, broken head studs, warped heads, all sorts of no good. ask andy2 about all the troubles and downfalls of compound turbos. if you want 30 psi, a compound setup is not what you want. you will barely be using it to its potential. compounds are for like 50+ psi of boost usually. a properly setup VNT would probably work better, and would fit a hell of alot better than compounds. just think about how much room we dont have in there for multiple turbos.

ok well my goal is 30 plus psi daily. id like to be able to put up a fight on the streets. plus my friend keeps talking smack about why dont i just throw a 16v in it and be done. i like the td. its fun. the smoke is fun. i drive a tdi also. plus i think a beast 1.6td in a mk1 would be a blast. so what vnt would best suit my needs?

GT2056V off a jeep liberty with a 2.8 diesel.
my GT1749V puts out over 30 psi, but idk how happily it does it. it will make 25 psi boost all day long tho. its been building lots of boost for over 2 years now and it doesnt look any more chewed up then when i put it on there.
