Im ready to add some more power to my 84 jetta td. I have already made my own boost controller and am running around 18 to 20 psi, built a 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust from turbo back, and turned the fuel and played with the adjustment on the boost pin. The pump was just rebuilt to stock specs (this was before i knew anything about performance pumps for these motors) and the injectors have been rebuilt and a new stock (again before i knew) headgasket and head bolts.
I am thinking of a intercooler or maybe a different turbo but i just dont really know what order to do things in and would like some advise. I dont really need to push more then 20psi i would maybe rather see it spool quicker or work more efficiently. I know going over 20psi ill need a metal headgasket and headstuds and im trying to avoid that at this point.
i never needed a metal gasket, and i used to run about 35 psi IN A 1.5!. with stock 1.5 bolts and HG. the first mod you should do now is get that engine breathing cold air. as cold as you can get it in there. i have a HUGE intercooler and my turbo sucks air out of the rain tray. i noticed a big difference when i moved my air intake from the engine room to the rain tray.
if you just want 20 psi, you can run that on a completely stock engine. right now im running a max of 28 psi with no wastegate, blow off valve, or boost controller. and this is all on a stock 1.5, so if you have a 1.6, you will have no problems.
right now i am running 20 psi and it seems to be fine egt's are within reason after a long pull (never above 1300). What intercooler is everyone running that i could find at a junkyard? i would like to put it either in front of the radiator or relocate the battery and put it there with is own fan
also what turbo is on my motor or how do i find out what it is what numbers do i look for and where might they be. Like i said before its and 84 jetta turbo diesel
You most likely have a T3. There should be a tag on the compressor side of the turbo right below the inlet that will tell you for sure.
