200 dollar diesel pickup

okay, I know you have heard a story like this a hundred times, but this time it happened to me. Once upon a time I was in lowes and i over heard a woman ***ing at her husband about his grandpa's truck that was in her garage and wouldn't run. Well, he says, "It isn't worth fixing, it's a diesel for crying out loud" I ambled over and recognized that he works at the same hospital that I do so I said hello and asked what kind of truck it was and he said a VW. It had been his grandfathers and he had visions of fixing it and driving it and she had visions of getting it the hell out of her garage. She pipes up that i can have it if i get it today. He said 200 dollars. Well, I jumped the bus bar to my tracker battery and it fired right up and i drove it home. I got her home and looked her over good and there was only 3 small spots of rust. none in the towers or underneath. it was undercoated since new and now had 165,000 miles. I took the camper shell off, hadded a DIY tonneau and drove it for a couple months. But alas I longed for power and since one of the cylinders of the old NA 1.6 had low compression. So I bought a GTD engine and had it shipped to my house. Not cheap, but then again, with a 200 dollar truck, it still wasn't breaking the bank.
2.75 turbo back exhaust, 1.6 GTD with oil and water cooled turbo. Mazda RX7 intercooler topmounted with fresh air scoop for the intercooler and cone filter. (I know, I know it's not stock but that is just how I roll) MK2 springs and rear air shocks. I actually use the truck and needed some ground clearance. Two tanks for WVO and WMO setup with lift pump. EGT, boost oil pressure and temp gauges. That's about it. A couple peeps wanted me to post a pic. thanks to everyone who has helped me sort out my boost issues and put up with all of my inane questions.
just posted a bunch of webshots pics and they won't come up so here are the links manually

PICS! i wanna see the TMIC all rigged up. and another thought, put your air filter in the rain tray, then it will be even colder air. putting my air filter in the rain tray gave me almost as much power as it did adding an intercooler. plus it sounds sweet at idle.

lol flat black, heres some inspiration!
http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=19534.msg147917#msg147917by the way, my car was nice and cheap like yours too. it was free-ninety-nine! i figure i have almost a grand into it and it will do 140 mph. and that was with a boost leak and i could only spool to 15... now i spool to around 25 most of the time.

my blow off valve is set to blow at 10 psi, which is okay for now since my pvc intercooler pipe probably won't take much more anyway

but i have some tubing on order and i'm going to plug my BOV as soon as it gets here....as soon as I find the BOV. it doesn't seem to be in the location that it is supposed to be in, but push it up over 10 psi and it makes itself known

Great Caddy, I too wounder about those hood scoops. I never would have thought to put the IC there. Are you sure you are getting enough air through it? The bottom of it might be a high pressure area. Guess a few temp probes would answer this.
I like the gauges you added. Reminds me of what I did to my Caravan diesel ;-)

ghastly? hmm. i don't think i know anyone who uses the word "ghastly". let alone can spell it. oh well, form follows function, at least in this case. I used a top mount intercooler because the old girl had factory air that still works and i'm getting old and the thought of not having AC does not work for me.
arb, I have a fan underneath that runs all the time the key is on. I also have highdensity foam around the hood that connects to the IC when the hood is closed so the air has no choice but to go through the IC. Aircraft spruce says ....EGTs are 700 at 75 mph with 95 degree ambient temp. here, and that is with 1.5 inch temporary intercooler pipe. So i think the air is going through....must be. Took her out and ran her hard up a couple long pulls today and when i stopped i let it idle and the radiator fan didn't come on for a couple minutes so i'm pleased with overall cooling

lol, sorry. Maybe if you painted them to match the hood they would look better? Anywho, if you like it then that's all that matters. The exterior paint color is awesome.

I actualy like that color interior and it looks to be in pretty good shape too. I like the Beige color they use in todays interiors and the dark colors show dirt a lot easier too, it's a real nice looking truck but please do something with those hood scoops. I am thinking about an I/C for my Rabbit too and where to put it, I like how yours is set up but I imagine it is hard to come up with a way to get air to it. I have been thinking about a front mount with one of those duckbill type valances but from what I've read they cause a good bit of wind resistance also. I'd like to see one already done using the rain tray area to get an idea what needs to be done, the lines would not have to be very long either. Again you have a very nice truck and a hell of a good price on top of it all.

I like everything about it except the purple steering wheel cover. How big is the cone filter? That is what I want to run in mine and looks like it fits well.
The only thing that needs done in the engine area looks like you need to put that valve cover breather away and route it into the intake tube behind that nice big dual cone air filter. Dakotakid has told me time and again that the oil vapors need to be in there for the valves to be lubed and not wear as fast. It makes sense and that is the way VW always did it, so you might want to think about that before your valves tell you to

My dead grandfater game me the purple steering wheel cover and asked that I put it on my car and he would protect me when I drive.
I couldn't agree more about the valve cover. I realized that was a bad move when i saw all the exhaust vapors that were comming out of the valve cover breather. I am planning on doing that asap. I don't know what size the cone filter is, I got it off craigslist for a song. I think it's probably about 8 inches. Just kidding about my grandfather. He thinks the steering wheel cover looks like *** too.
