I just installed my new T stat and water pump housing along with the water pump. Got it on there the one thing I notice it sits out past the crank pulley a bit the old one lined up perfectly. I re used the old pulley so I know its the correct hub for the pump. Is there some sort of spacer needed or did I get the wrong water pump. Any Ideas. I need am on a bit of a deadline need it done by monday. Maybe out of luck on that one though.

The pulley can go on two ways. Did you try flipping it?

I'm pretty sure the hub can be moved on the shaft

Early Rabbit, up to '80 had a larger hub/flange waterpump. Then in '81, they had the smaller hub/flange waterpump. The amount of how far it stuck out was the same.
Hope this helps.

Yeah that helps means something isnt right and I have the correct water pump. Now how does the hub move back and forth on the shaft. I have yet to try to flip it around so It may be as simple as that But the wife said no more wrenching for today. So I will get back at it early AM tomorrow.

The hub on the waterpump shaft does not move in or out. It is pressed on to the shaft. Like what was said before, is the w/p pully the one for the engine and does flipping it around make a differeance?

yeah its the pulley that came off the original water pump. I will check in the morning if flipping it makes a difference. Hopefully that takes care of it. Since it doesnt move on the shaft Im not sure what else it could be.

I always put it on backwards the first time, it seems whenever I take mine off

.the side with the big indentation goes on the water pump side. flip it over, you'll be fine.

flipped it made it worse. SO I flipped it back and put it all back together a tried it. Works fine. I guess its just a little mis aligned took it down to the local german mechanics house.(he lives around the corner) he said its not far enough to worry about And the belt is tracking fine. So all is good she is running perfectly. Well that part of it anyway. Still need to figure out my ignition problem.
