Removing the A/C compressor permanently

My Jetta came with A/C and since I bought it (and the previous woner) it never worked. So I yanked all the A/C components out that I could easily get at. It runs A LOT cooler after pulling the condenser and blowing air throught the radiator.
Anyway, I had to keep the compressor installed to turn the alternator. It one more thing under the hood that I am tired of screwing with, so is there anyway to extend the pulley shaft on the alt and idler so that I can run 1 belt from the crank, H2O pump, alt . Or is there some other way of routing the belts so that I can get rid of the compressor.
Thanks

Get an alternator, bracket and pulleys from a non-a/c car. I suppose you could fab a bracket yourself if your good with that sort of thing but it'll be easier to find the parts from a car without factory a/c.

Finding that is a lot easier said than done. I have been searching on and off for almost 2 years and have come up short this whole time.
Thanks

I'd give Parts Place a call, they used to have all that kind of stuff but I heard it changed hands in the family and it's not what it used to be. I called them yesterday and they don't even have a door for a Rabbit 2 door but they do salvage as many parts as possible though.

The mk2 bracket is the same. All you need is the adjustment arm from a non-a/c car.
That's right, and an alternator from a non AC car

I'm just going through this myself... I bought my car with a 1.6TD already swapped in to it from an AC car, so there's a compressor hanging off the front even though the car has no AC. Some time over the past month or two the bottom bolt on the AC mounting bracket came undone which in turn resulted in one of the mounting ears cracking off the AC compressor. I'm not about to buy a new compressor for a car that doesn't have AC, so...
I ended up ordering the bracket and adjusting bolts from the dealership - just over $60CDN including taxes, that was for the bracket itself, the adjusting bolt with its toothed nut and the bottom bolt that holds the bracket on.
Still hunting for a non-AC alternator or at least the pulley though...

Which piece is the adjustment arm? Does it replace the large bracked that holds the idler?
Vanbcguy: A long time ago I cracked one of the ears on my A/C compressor. I just rotated it 1/4 and used the next ear. There are 4 of them so I can break 1 more before I am in a jam!
Anyone have a adjustment arm bracket they want to sell?

I'm surprised this is so hard to find. Do you have any kind of you-pull-it junkyard around? I thought the alternator mounts exactly the same for any mk2: gas, diesel, Golf, Jetta, Cabriolet, etc. with the only difference being a/c or not. Am I wrong about that? I see non a/c Golfs (I own one) and Cabriolets all the time, Jettas not so much.

A lot of the junk yards around here don't let you wander around the yards like they used to. And then if they do, most times the cars are stacked 4 or 5 high making things a bit hairy. Just in case this wasn't bad enough, there are copperhead snakes up here that just love junked cars!

No, the a/c alternator has differently positioned mounting points.
To the OP, you may want to check "The Samba" for non-a/c alternators.

Yep, the whole idler etc all goes away with the non-AC bracket. That's actually why I wanted to go that route - much simpler design, one less belt, no more idler, you name it.

Got pics of the parts necessary? and a finished example?
Good to know!

I don't have a picture right now and if I did I am still messing up posting pictures (see my thread on the inside of a WVO burning IDI), but there isn't anything to it. There are 4 ears equally spaced around the compressor. I think you use 2 of the ears to install it. If 1 ear breaks, unbolt the compressor, rotate it 1/4 turn and reinstall using a fresh ear and the broken one is in a position that is not used.
