  just the white/grey smoke right?  my old '86 TD used to do that... i think it could have been that the valves needed adjustment.  otherwise it ran fine and gave very good mileage (over 1000km/tank)

• I took the engine apart today. I didn't see anything out of the ordinary... but maybe someone else's keen eye will catch something.

• Yeah that's the rod. The rest of it is in the piston below it. The pin is fine but there is that crack you can see in the piston leading to the pin. I can't move the part of the rod that is in the piston

• Kinda looks like the piece of rod in the piston is junda jammed in there agains the inside of the piston skirt?  I would have bet on the piston going to pieces before the rod if the wrist pin siezed..  Maybe just a flawed rod?
