On a side note, why does Garrrett list most VNT's as not rebuildable? I know they are but is it just a parts selling thing? Can they not control the rebuilding quality out in the world?
Is the scroll damaged or just the backing plate and wheel? Is the shaft bent?
It looks like it is just the backing plate and the wheel. I can spin the shaft freely by hand and I do not notice any sort of wobble when I watch the clearance at the bottom of the wheel as it spins. Of course thats just by eye. It would probably need to be checked spinning with a dial guage to be exact.

Beats the hell out of me. I have seen rebuild kits for these before, so I do not know why Garrett makes such a big deal out of it. If I can find a suitable wheel and backng plate I believe this on would be good to go again.
The sprinter 2.7L 2256v has the same backing plate incase you find one of them instead.
I found this company on line. I found the replacement wheel, but have not matched up the backing plate yet. Great info on this site. Loks like it has everything you need for vnt rebuilds.
Do you think there would be any benefit to going with a slightly smaller wheel?

The sprinter VNTs are pretty common on eBay for fairly cheap. Are the compressor wheels the same?

I'm almost 100 % sure they are the same trim (exducer/inducer).The only issue is that some of the jeep turbos had thread-on compressor wheels and some had the usual nut holding the wheel on the shaft.The thread on wheel uses a different shaft that is tapered VS the non threaded one is a parallel shaft so wheels are not interchangeable!
You could turn the jeep turbo into a 2256 by installing the sprinter wheels into the jeep housings.
No nut on the end of the shaft on the compressor side. Looks like it is a thread on wheel.

What did you end up using for a v-band clamp on the turbine housing? How does this boost for you on your TDI?

Who knows, I may end up going that route. I am waiting for a call back from a turbo supply shop about the parts I need for this. I guess it will all play out to what makes better economic sense. Is the 2256 starting to get to large to run on the vw diesel?
