Hey everyone i have a 1983 Audi 5000 turbo diesel with a 2.1 5 cylinder. I just wanted to know if there were any mods i could to to this car. Larger turbo, boast control, exhaust etc? The car is automatic and is really not bad for a diesel but i was looking for a bit more. The car has pretty good low end and mid range prower, but not very much top end. It has a top speed of about 100mph, is there anything that i can do about that? Also does anyone know how much boast it runs stock and how much it can handle?

you can definitely boast around 100 hp from the 5 cyl TD

one thing that would really let you boast about your power, would be to ditch that automatic garbage and install a nice 5 speed tranny (pretty rare for a 5000, but would a 4000 fit? I would think so... and those arent so rare)
btw I wouldn't run your engine at 100 mph or even near that (especially with an automatic tranny) unless maybe on a good engine with some work done to it. it MUST be burning a lot of oil at that speed!!!

The bellhousing pattern is different between the 5 and 4 bangers, maybe the bellhousings can be swapped though? I think that is what you were getting at.

sorry guys, i ment boost for the turbo. and the car has only 97k miles on it and runs just fine at 100mph without burning oil

. I also like it with the automatic, i just put alot of time in to doing a rebuild on the tranny so im happy with it. All i want to know is if anyone knows if i can raise the boost on the turbo? any help would be great, thanks

oh btw, i'm a big audi 5000 fan and have owned about 6 of them and the is the 2nd automatic one out of the 6, i think the automatics and much harder to fine then the standers, maybe its becasue of the 60 min thing in the 80's. :?:

Yes you can, you need a manual boost controller, you need to have a boost gauge installed before you do this, it would beOK to raise the boost a few pounds over stock, but as I mentioned in the votex thread you need to remove and cap the blow off valve that is located on the intake manifold or you will never see more than 10 PSI and you will over work your turbo. Raising the boost alone will not give you any more power. I am not on my regular computer so I don't have a link handy to the page that shows which screws you need to turn on your injection pump to increse fueling, someone should chime in with something along thoes lines.

thanks for all of the information, does anyone know how much i can increase the boost and still be somewhat safe? And how much boost the turbo can handle and still work properly?

i got a quattro tranny to sell ya!! LOL i think the autos are junk most of them.
As far as mods..should be about the same as the Vw's 20+# boost, bigger exhaust, etc

thx for the information, 20 psi sounds really high, the are is pretty decent stock so im sure running that amount of boost will make it pretty quick. My friend has a 89 jetta 1.8 automatic thats gas and my audi gets it everytime, so im sure doubling the boost will help a bunch. btw the automatic is really not bad, i have owned a few audi 5000 5 speeds and i like the automatic just as much.

35 psi is about the limit of the stock head gasket etc..it will hold it if you casrefully with the egt and the timing ..so its not to advanced...
