will the head from a n/a 1.9d caddy (1Y) fit and run ok on my ABL 1.9 td engine? I was under the understanding that all 1.9diesel heads are the same? just the gaskets that differ? Is this correct??

Why is that? The 1Y engine is IDI too.

i got my new head today (from my mate, off a 1y engine) and all looks to be the same. Also, the head looks brand new casting, and its not a VW part. So im guessing its a new remanufactured one from vw engineering or similar, can anybody confirm??
Also, what does the little extra pipe coming out of the side of the head do (by the water flange) as my ABL head has one, and my 1y doesnt?? other than that, thats the only difference that i can see??
so should be ok, as long as i dont need that pipe??
here are some pics?

and here's a pic of my old head, with pipe, and new one without??

I have never seen a diesel head with one of those outlets. Only on 1.8 and 2.0 gasser heads. And not a VW casting. Someone else will have to attest to the quality of it.

Yeah aftermarket head. Had one on my car seemed ok. I think having a OE german head just makes people feel better.

almost looks like it is for the EGR cooler... could be wrong though.

yeah as long as good coolant is used there really shouldn't be any problems... unless there were casting defects. i'm sure that these manufacturers must adhere to some type of quality inspections... i hope
that being said, a coolant additive might be a good idea if you decide to go with a cheaper non OEM head. jimfoo seems to have had great success using evans coolant in his head/motor. the coolant runs with zero pressure, so is much safer, and would probably save a lot of heater cores out there  too bad its so damn expensive though!!! :x
part of the problem is also their ordering site... how the heck is anyone going to know exactly what they need??? they should sell kits!
