1984 Jetta TD. Bentley says that the quick-glow relay can be identified by part number 171 911 261A adn that the factory does not install the quick glow system on the TDs.
My 84 TD has relay 171 911 261A installed, however I have to manually jump the glow plug bus to the battery to get it to start. The glow plug light comes on and off rather quickly on the dash. I ran through the Bentley checks and all the contacts on the fuseblock checked out, as well as the fuse on the engine bay side.
Now I also have two spare relays from an 86 TD and an 89 NA. They are both 171 911 261E. I've done a little searching and some stuff I've read indicates that this is perhaps the same relay as 261A.
However the Bentley does not agree. According to it, the 261A should NOT be in the car, but does not mention the correct part number.
Are 261A and 261E the same? Can I use 261E on the 84TD? If not, what part number do I need?
