best years for TD? 1.6TD vs 1.9TD

Hi there,
Curious what motor and what years are recommended.
I'm starting to shop for a turbo car, want something I can have some fun with (tweak-tweak) and may run wvo sometime in the future.
It's been a couple years since I've had a turbo diesel and I still miss the clatter, the torque and I even miss the smell a bit. And I really miss the mileage!
Thanks,
Ian

my latest observations:
-1.9L
..more likely to find a good engine
..much more off boost torque, better low/midrange power, keep the small turbo to augment this characteristic
..very heavy internals, poor ports, especially exhaust. NOT a revver.
..nice to have a serpentine belt system for alternator & /a/c.
..Prone to total engine failure due to poorly designed crank sprocket keyway. Sprocket loosens and the bolt can sheer.
..Some engines didn't come with LDA on pump. (extra fueling with boost)
-1.6L
.. more difficult to find a decent condition engine
..low end power pretty soft, distinct turbo lag compared to tiny turbo'd 1.9L
..can be revved quite high
..better port design.
..rat's nest of belts if using p/s & a/c. Alternator belt needs tightening frequently.
..pretty well bulletproof engine. No common failures noted.

Dr D,
Thanks for the detailed reply.
I imagine a fix for the crank sprocket has been discussed before. I'll try a search.
-1.6L mechanical lifter vs hydraulic.
I would think a hydraulic lifter would be preferable (less noise, less maintenance) Yes?
-1.9L Non LDA models. Is this limited to certain years? Or will I have to inspect the car to be sure?
Thanks again,

i want to know the most accurate way of telling if my 1.9 is non-LDA too.

definitely hydraulic lifter.
there are a couple different methods discussed for converting IDI 1.9L cranks to take the TDI sprocket.
LDA: On the top of the pump, 'green' 1.9L engines don't have the little rubber hose running from the intake manifold to the pump. it's just a flat blanking plate on top.

Doesn't mech lifters give more power? (I have not driven hyd so I wouldnt know myself)

i believe conventional thinking is that for very high rpm, you need a solid lifter. (there's a recent post with this topic) for a converted equivalent cam profile, there's really no difference in power. Although, you could run the mech. lifters a little tighter for more lift, but I don't think it'd be enough to do much.

I guess this is a non-lda

and with the pic in "smog's diy make your td faster" you can compare the 2 versions

No, that's got a boost enrichment device on it. See the thing on top of the pump with the line going into it?

Forget 'LDA' .... Load dependant Aneroid???
Try:
 If it has a 'Spaceship' on the top of the pump then it's fuel enriched with the turbo...

awesome,
Thanks for all the info.
It certainly narrowed my search down.

One more thing:
1.9TD = at least 2x the cost of a 1.6TD.

From my recent experience, there was a mid-year change on the Passats,
up to about October 93 they didn't have the LDA, had single stage injectors.
Avoid. Harder to get parts for, a lot less driveability, and worse mileage.

  don't forget to consider a Brand spanking new 1.9 LongBlock (prices below in USD)
http://www.maesco.com/products/vw_engines/vw_spec/vw_spec.htmlI got mine for $1700, but current price is $2200, they are getting tough to find ;
http://www.overlandparts.com/dealerlist.htmWe may need to find a source in Mexico, as I think Overland has stopped stocking. (they were a major pain for dealers anyway) Surely someone can get resourceful and get a 'south of the south border contact. Brazil would be another option. You could likely sell 10 - 20 in a 'group buy', as they are a nice 'dropin'
the complete TD's were $3250 but are now $3800+ (include new INJ pump, injectors, WP, and small turbo, probably a good deal for all that) You can always stick these into about any WC VW. '75-99.5
the low end torque of 1.9 is really worth it. BUT... you will find overal performance not much difference than a 1.6TD (I have got them used for $100 - $750(whole car)) I got a couple in Spokane for $500ea, but my last one came from Florida !! $400 shipped, with tranny. I get better mileage with 1.6's
I got my (2) 1.9's from Overland with 1.6 Hyd heads, I thought it wouldn't rev, but it does very well, though it could use a Turbo... I am near sea level, but have plenty of turbos on the shelf for when I move to altitude.

In a Samurai-swap situation, where the motors work a lot harder than in the cars they came from, the 1.9td seems to average 27mpg. The 1.6td gets up around 35mpg. The 1.6NA gets up to 45mpg - but I think the NA equipped rigs are going slower, both on the highway, topping out at 60 cruise, and lots slower on hills. Part of the reason my 1.9td was getting 27 was I can easily run around 70, hills or not. I really like the idea of trying a 1.6 turbo on it, but I don't want to give up the low end boost at 1500rpm - so I rrreaally am watching the variable vane thread fsGTD is working on.
To make the simple point, the 1.9td is easy to make a lot of power with, but the 1.6td could be faster over all, and will not hit you in the wallet as much for fuel.
janb - if you are reseller of those 1.9s, let me know, I will pass it on to the many people who ask me where to get one for their Samurai (and lately, there is a Toyota kit). I do internet-know a couple Samurai enthusiasts in Brazil, too
