i really hate to make a post like this, but...
im going to be looking at a motor soon. owner claims it has 15k since a rebuild. its an ecodiesel motor with an aaz pump and 1st oversize pistons. everything is supposed to be rebuilt, rings, bearings, pistons, seals. i assume it has original rods, crank, valves, etc, but i am not sure.
ecodiesel has hydro lifters, oil squirters, and all of the internals of a td but just came stock with an na pump, right?
so, has anyone sold or bought a motor similar to this? if so, what would you say its worth? ive seen original low milage 1.6td swaps going for $1k-$2k-ish... would this be in the same ballpark?
thanks!

Well I spent the better part of $1300.00 rebuilding mine and that's mainly parts, my labor isn't figured in that.
BUT.. If I was to have to sell it I would think I would be lucky to get $1000.00 for it as a complete engine.
Don't know if that helps ya.

It's pump puts out less fuel then a NA, but otherwise, yes to all the above. It does have a different turbo though (K14 instead of K24 or T3)
what would be reasonable to offer the guy?

If.....if I felt reasonably sure this engine runs well and if you get the air cleaner, starter, alternator, etc. as part of the deal, well....I probably would not complain at $1300 or maybe a bit more. I, too, just rebuilt an N/A and I've got more money in it than this amount!!!!!
Up here in the northern plains, these cars and engines are about as abundant as T-Rex's for pets!!!!
I cant believe how much an engine goes for over there, here a complete mk3 AAZ car is about £200 in the scrap yards,my AAZ car was £300 off ebay, with a vw exchange engine fitted and a new fuel pump on it too

you guys also have tighter emissions restrictions and fuel costs... i guess once the car starts leaking oil or getting crap mileage they junk them? maybe even with a few bad glow plugs?
the motors are pretty abundant here too, but not in rebuilt condition. the older idi's pistons are hammered on an angle by the pre-cup design.. putting some nice force on the cylinder wall. doesn't seem like much, but over time (400'000km's or so) it starts to show it if you don't use a really nice high grade oil, and change it to keep soot levels down.
now the TDI's have a really nice design.. in that most, if not all the force is exerted downward, and not against the cylinder walls, although there will always be some 'rubbing' due to the way that the rods work. TDI's can last much much longer, but with EGR systems, the engines are subjected to high soot levels, and gunked up intakes which can ruin everything.
just thought i'd share  and btw, $1300 is a good price.. depending on what was done, and what parts were used. if the turbo and pump are rebuilt, i'd go for it at $1300 right away. if not, then $1300 is alright, but a bit steep, as the pump may need a rebuild in the near future, as well as the turbo. would hate to find out 15-20k km's later that they used the 1 piece thrust bearing and @#$#ed up the crank ... but with a rebuilt turbo & pump, at least you wouldn't be totally sunk.
thanks for all of the replies
