Hi,
I just a acquired a 1989 Diesel (non turbo) Jetta (with AC) with 126k original miles. The power steering pump belt is extremely loose but it doesn't seem as though there is any way to tighten it. Any ideas or suggestions ? The other 2 belts (AC & alternator) have a nifty tension adjuster screw/bolt, this one, however, just has a couple of removable pulleys (3 hex bolts)
Could it be as simple as removing a pulley buying a new belt and slapping it back in with the pulley ? It seems strange to me that there is no apparent way to adjust this.
Thanks in advance !
Brian
With the right sized belt, the power steering pump can be adjusted. Its has a lota movement for adjustment.
If you get under the car and have a good proper look at the pump assembly im sure you'll figure out how its done. The whole pump moves.
Cheers!
On my 90 Jetta the pump doesn't move, there is a tensioner towards the firewall from the pump.
And as Torchd mentioned from the bottom is much easier.
Sounds like you could have either adjuster to me so you better get under it to see.
