Actually im starting to swap my 1.9TD in my 1973 vw westy with the stock 002 tranny
Im not the kinda driving faster than 60 mph, but the engine will rev high enough .
What if i want my 1.9TD more bullet proof as a revver? Swap in 1.9 TDI piston is a good idea??? ..is it because of piston balancing that this engine is not a revver? (i heard TDI are good for high RPM instead)
Cause sure ill do some speed passing road snail...
I also have 2x 1.6td laying around, no inj pump, but im sure 1.9Td is a better way than rebuilding one og my 1.6td (wich for sure will go for scrap yard)
Now about the tranny, is there anything i can do otherwise than swapping it for a 091 ??
thx for any input

couldn't you use the tranny out of a old bug for higher gearing ?
i recall my ex brother in law swaping the car tranny out his buggy , for a bus tranny due to the lower gearing .
i also remember the rear end eaither lifting or squatting with one tranny , then doing the opposite with the other tranny .
isn't there some sort of gear reduction on the ends of the drive axles ?
it's been so long since i actually worked on one ...

Reason why the 1.9 isn't a revver is because the crank is heavier. You could have the crank lightened and balanced or compensate with a lighter flywheel.
But, with equal amounts of work, the 1.9 will have more power and the 1.6 will be rev happy (that is if the injection pump has been worked on to prevent the camplate from skipping above 5500rpm).
I wanted to make my 1.6 rev to 7000rpm with stock internals, lightweight flywheel and modded pump. Buuuut plans have changed...

If you put in TDI pistons, you have to totally convert the engine to a TDI, otherwise compression will be so low that it would never start.

safe or not, a 1.9L will rev as high as you want it to, provided the govenor's willing. The benefit of doing so is somewhat dubious however. It's kinda like making an ox do a superdog agility course.
I've found it best to strengthen an engine's strengths, in this case, bottom and mid range power. A mildly tweaked AAZ with a K03 or T2/K14 even, is a torque beast. Which brings us back to gearing. I'm sure if you do a little research, you'll find several VW aircooled aftermarked companies stocking many choices for gearing. You'd probably do best to consider changing the ring and pinion gearing, rather than just the top gear.
Try this place for starters:

Seems the only way to go is re-gearig the tranny!!
Burnt_Servo.. well bugs tranny are too weak and will fail if used in a heavier vehicle as a westfalia.. also about gearing on wheel, those were called reduction box ..used on split bus until ..what.. 1967 ?? Cause the engine was so weak they had no choice (1200cc in 1960) ... i now this i also have a Split bus !! Nowaday to avoid those they sell a tranny called "freeway Flyer" . If there was such a Freeway Flyer for T2 Bus (1969-1979) i guess ill buy one!!
My main concern about high revolution is the heat!! Thats why i wanted to make my 1.9td a revver. Not to go to 140kmp, but to drive smoothly at 110-120 kmh . If i can avoid the engine to heat too much ill be happy...
Ligntening the flywheel is a good idea, and also balancing the crank .. those are easy step
In the same time, since i have two 1.6td for part laying around.. could it be a way to use a 1.6td block and a 1.9td heads?

about the 1.6td ...
im keeping the heads and few thing (turbos) ... the blocks will go for vw enthusiast experimenting (
www.vwquebec.ca) ... if not.. i guess ... ill see.. i doubt it worth the trip to come and get them from where you are .. you can still find full 1.6td here for a few hundreds.
I already have two AAZ engine.. one in my 1997 Jetta and the other sitting in my previously swapped 1991 jetta .. now going in the Baywindow .. i wish i could have exhaust pipe in the back smoking black as big truck does he he
Find me a decent 6 ribs 091 tranny, and ill make it halfway with TD part to exchange

I'm pretty positive you can get the parts to beef up the trans you have. Some aircooled racer guys use those trannys so they can run hi horsepower in their VW based cars . The beetle transmissions had their weaknesses and with a little bit of mods would cram them into a T1 chassis. The T2 transmissions were much stronger and all kinds of r&p s
are available . Even with technology and knowledge you can make a T1 trans hold up to more than 300 hp now. Alot of the off road guys use T2 automatics for racing- put one of those in with the gearing you want and watch those tires smoke!
