i have a 1.9L TD and i have a K03 turbo on it (stock) i recently bought a new k03 but it looks way bigger than mine i dont think its a KKK i only paid 300.00 for it.... bolt pattern is 3 bolt but completely oposite than mine....does anyone know any bigger turbos that bolt right up to the 3 bolt flange??? any thoughts would be great!
thanks!
The "K03" portion of the 3k/warner part number only refers to the basic frame/bearing size of the turbo, there are many variations within a given frame size. There are lots of different compressor/turbine wheels, trims and housings. By the sounds of it you got a turbo from a VW 1.8T gas engine. They are capable of moving a bunch more air but at lower pressure than the diesel version, best suited to high revving gas engines.
As for upgrades, There aren't really any that will bolt up to the K03 flange. Your best bet for easy bolt on (high rpm) power would be the K24 or T3 from a VW 1.6TD. You'll need the 1.6TD exhaust manifold and you'll need to do some work on the oil lines and downpipe. The manifold and turbo will bolt on after some "clearancing" work on the intake manifold. If you love low rpm torque and aren't going for maximum hp, the K14 from early 1.9TD's works well, same installation drill as the K24 or T3, you need the manifold and downpipe/oil line mods will be needed.
According to the manual, a regular 150hp 1.8T with a K03 runs 7-9 psi.
The 180 and 225hp 1.8T's run 11 and 15psi respectively but I didn't think they used a K03 (maybe K04?), at very least, it's not the same compressor as the lower power versions. Difficult to say which turbo James8485 might have, but I guess he could have a turbo from the latest 225hp 1.8T, if thats the case it will efficiently support boost pressures in excess of 15psi and I stand corrected.
Still may be a bit sluggish for the diesel due to the larger turbine A/R. I hear "bleachedbora" builds a hybrid from K04 gas and K03 diesel parts, might be worth a go on the AAZ?
i had the turbo rebuilt and on the side it says K03 ..... and a few other numbers its is very slugish as i have turned the turbo back to 10PSI and the fuel down! i bought a K03 for it 3 months ago for 300 bucks brand new and i look at the 2 and the one i bought a few months ago is way biger i thougt i had a k14 or somthing as its a 97 AAZ motor......
speaking of that has anyone heard anything bad about this motor>>>my crank pully doesnt wobble!!
The only thing to look out for is the crank pulley....and just because it doesnt wobble doesnt mean it cant break!!!!!
best bet is to change timiing belt, bolt (for crank pulley) and inspect the pulley and the crank.
