Got about 1000mile on my 1.6 turbo motor. It has a Giles pump set at .95, 3" SS passenger downpipe, 3" ex. with a flowmaster and runnin 20 psi max on boost. It's in an 86 Golf two door.
The back of the car gets sooted up after about a week. I played with the max fuel screw. It seem no soot no power. The max EGT I get is about 1150F under an hard pull with 20 psi boost allot of smoke.
Is this about normal? My fuel milages seems good (38-40 MPG). Full boost is about 3800-4500 rpms. I also notice when the engine is hot the turbo woks better.
So can I make this engine not soot up my hatch back, but still keep my new found power?
Thanks for any help.
Turn down exhaust tip. I wouldn't reduce power to keep soot off my rear end.
x2
the back of my jetta gets sooty, but i have straight exhaust tips.
the turbo likes the hot oil because its thinner. if you want your turbo to last, don't beat on it when the engine is cold. i try to stay out of 5 psi range until the engine hits 1/4 on the gauge.
hey do you have a IC in your Golf with those EGT?
What they said, slight turn down on the tip. If you are getting the soot you have room(fuel) for more boost. IC and try and boost a few more pounds.
Get some synthetic oil into that engine once it's properly broken in and the turbo will really love you.
